He was born 1720 in Overwharton Parrish, Stafford County, Virginia, and died Abt. 1784 in Stafford County, Virginia.

Notes for JAMES YELTON:

Suzanne. In hopes I may have been of some help, I looked up the references in our Stafford County Books to James Yelton. There only seems to be one. He was a Taylor (tailor) and appears in several Estate Settlements with the notation of paying him as a taylor. He first appears in the Estate Account of Brent "paid James Yelton taylor for making a coat and pair of breeches." The last reference in our 1780-1786 Deed and Will Book shows he has died for there is his Inventory totalling twenty five pounds, five shillings and four pence Recorded in 1784.

From Iris Reily - 04/05/2007 to the Yelton List

If you look in the IGI at www.familysearch.org the earliest Yelton's there are:

Rabage YELTON Female Birth: ABT 1541 West Horndon, Essex, England

Rabage YELTON Female Marriage: 1562 West Horndon, Essex, England

Richard YELTON Male Christening: 21 Jul 1644 Binfield, Berkshire, England

(there is no sign of marriage or of death of this child {or of the two below} that I can find)

Aaron YELTON Male Christening: 22 Feb 1645 Binfield, Berkshire, England

Joane YELTON Female Christening: 9 Jun 1650 Binfield, Berkshire, England

However, I found the following in 2002 while doing research in England in Civil Records:

There were two Yelton's - George and John living in Cumberland, England (North West England near border) in 1538. It could be possible that George or John was a parent of the Rabage Yelton above, but Cumberland is pretty far away from Essex. Back in 1999 when I did a statistical study of the LDS International Genealogical Index (IGI) records; I found 59 spelled "Yelton". 35 in Scotland, 15 in England and 8 in Wales. Of course there were a lot more if you count variant spellings.

Some of the Variant spellings: Yolton, Yolten (mostly from Cornwall); Yollaton, Yallaton, Yealtone, Yealleton, Yallerton (mostly from Devon, near Braunton)

The Records in the IGI for Wales though were sent in by an individual, John James Cherry, whose mother was Margaret Yelton. They were NOT Birth or Baptism or Church or Civil Records. I hired a researcher to find any such records in Wales and he was unable to find any record of the name. So, they only exist in the LDS records.

>From MY NOTES:

There are several entries (8) for Wales that were submitted to the LDS/IGI that I believe to be incorrect. They are all on Film # 451114, p. 1480 Ref. # 19415; p.1534 Ref. 19594 and 19595; p. 1479 Ref # 19416 and # 19403. They are records of a William Yelton and several of his children who were SUPPOSED to have emigrated from Wales. All were submitted by John James Cherry. (Interestingly, these children have the very same names as those shown born in the parish records in Stafford

Co.,VA., IFR) An interesting side note is that John James Cherry had a brother, Jesse Yelton Cherry who was an Elder in the LDS and was serving as a minister in the UK when he contracted smallpox and died on May 15, 1865. He is buried in Nottingham Cemetery.

Also of interest to me is an entry for a James G. Yelton in the IGI with father Richard. James was supposedly born in 1714 in Scotland. No further information except that the submission was made after 1991 by an individual. This record also was not able to be duplicated in the official records of Scotland.

A lot of the entries in the IGI are from actual records that were photographed by the LDS Church and those entries are usually very reliable and provable. However, at one time anyone could send in records that were then added to the IGI. That may still be true, but I'm not sure. If entries in the IGI cannot be supported or proven by third party records - Civil accounts, Census Records,

Church records, Birth, Death or Marriage certificates - then we must hold them as suspect until such records can be found. Word of mouth is not an acceptable or reliable source for genealogy researchers. It is a rule of thumb in researching that you should have at least two "third party" records that agree in order for the "data" to be considered "information".

One of the reasons that there is little reason to believe the name comes from Wales is that names ending in "ton", "tun", or "toun" are considered to be of Anglo-Saxon origin (think back to the 600 - 800's if my memory is holding up. The Anglo-Saxon's did not make it very far into Wales or Cornwall or into the northern part of Scotland. These areas stayed mainly Celtic for a long period of time. More Saxons made it to the "UK" though than Norman's if my memory has not failed again. A genealogy expert sent me this message when I asked if the name could be Viking or Norse, "No Viking/Norse name would ever end with '-ton", which is the classic ending for a Saxon place name, so much so that historians use the geographical distribution of (inter alia) place names ending with '-ton' as evidence for the extent of both Saxon and (by exclusion) Viking/Norse settlement in Britain." A place name could be a farmstead, or a town, or a manor - any kind of settlement at all.

>From my research it is much more likely that we are English or Scottish or both. There is at least one "Yelton Manor" listed in the Domesday Book which was an inventory taken in about 1086 after the Norman conquest in 1066. There was another but I'm not sure it was mentioned in that book. One of them was in the North Riding of Yorkshire, which is near the border area and the other was in Devon, about 12 miles east of Plymouth. There is also a Youltoun Township in the North of Yorkshire.

Now at that time, people did not have surnames, per se. That came much later. (the late 1300's to 1500's). You might have been known as John the Tailor - John, son of James - or John of Yelton Manor, or John of Red Hill for example. Later they became surnames. John Taylor - John Jamison - John Yelton or John Manor - or - John Redhill.

To confuse matters further we have the language changes to contend with. Like the Scots surname Dalziel which is (pronounced dee-ell) was originally recorded in the form 'Dalyell' or 'Daliel'. The 'z' in the spelling is not really a 'z' at all; it represents the Middle English 'z with a tail' which had a sound similar to the modern English 'y'. Ea was also pronounced with our Y sound in some areas of the UK.

>From "Black's Surnames of Scotland", we have:

"YELTOUN. A surname recorded in Lanarkshire. Perhaps a variant of Youlton in the North Riding of Yorkshire." Earliest mention 1601. variant spellings Zeiltoune, Yuiltoun, Yeltoun, Zeilloune

Then there are these place names in Devonshire over many years. "The Place Names of Devon gives the following which seems to be phonetically sensible:" the E and Y seem to be interchangeable. ILTON and ELTON are both possibilities as well. Experts I have spoken to think that most of these could have sounded something like our "Yelton"

in chronological order:

Edetona 1086 from the Exeter Domesday Book

Edelton 1201 from the Feet of Fines for Devon and Cornwall Record Society

1912 Edelton 1238 from the Assize Rolls

Ydelthon 1242 from the Book of Fees 1922-3

Ydelthone 1242 from the Book of Fees 1922-3

Ydelton 1244 from the Assize Rolls

Edilton 1285 from Feudal aids

Yeldtone 1309 from The Episcopal Registers of the Diocese of Exeter1888ff

Ydelton 1310 from the Seldon Society Publications (volume 20)

Yediltone 1328 from The Episcopal Registers of the Diocese of Exeter1888ff

Ydelton 1368 from the Inquisitiones post mortem Record Commission 1806-28

Etheldon 1371 from the Inquisitiones post mortem Record Commission 1806-28

Yeltone 1374 from The Episcopal Registers of the Diocese of Exeter1888ff

Edilton al. Ethelton 1499 from the Index to the Charters and Rolls in the British Museum 1900-1912

Ilton 1999

"Even though there's a switch between E and Y it's remarkable that the place names seem to have survived with little change between 1201 and 1499 except for the blips in 1309 and 1374."

So, you can see it is not a simple thing to track down our ancestors. It is pretty remarkable that we have as much information as we do. There is no indication that Yelton was once YELVERTON that I can find or YOEVERTON for that matter. It is clear that at least back to the 1500's there was a spelling of the surname as it is today YELTON. The various variations also remain intact over many years.

I did a quick search of the LDS site again today and found a couple of entries I had not seen before that will now need to be looked at more closely. One is a Richard YALTON christened 3 September 1710 in Great Driffield, Yorkshire, England - Father is John Yalton.

The other one is for a Jane Ritchie YELTON born in Scotland, Father John Yelton and Mother Jane Ritchie. Jane Ritchie Yelton married James M. Mitchell b. Scotland on 27 September 1893 in Manhattan, New York, New York. No children listed. James parents are Andrew Mitchell and Isabella Milne. Both of these entries are from actual records - Christening and Marriage and may be reliable.

Lived in Stafford Co., VA until 1785 then moved to Amherst Co., VA until 1803 when he

moved to Iredell Co., NC until the spring of 1819 when he moved

to Pendleton Co., Ky to be near his brothers.

State of Kentucky

Pendleton County

On this 15th day of August 1833 personally appeared before W. W. Drake a

Justice

of the Peace in and for the county of Pendleton James Yelton a resident of

Pendleton County and State of Kentucky aged eighty five years who being

first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following

declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act

of congress passed June 7th AD 1832. That by reason of old age, infirmities

of body and the consequent loss of memory he cannot swear positively as to

the precise length or exact period of his services but according to the best

of his recollection he served no less than the period hereafter mentioned as

a private soldier in the Militia of Virginia and that he now resides about

15 miles from Falmouth the county seat of Pendleton and owing to the

infirmities of body old age and the loss of his sight to such a degree as to

make it difficult for him to find the road unless it be on one with which he

is well acquainted he cannot without great inconvenience and danger appear

at and in open court to make and swear to this his declaration. In the year

1775 this

(end pg 3)

declarant then a resident of the county of Stafford and State of Virginia

was drafted into the service of the United States as a militia man and was

from that time (say about the middle of the year) until the close of the

Revolutionary War held to militia duty and to be ready to march at a moments

warning to any front to which he was ordered indeed all the militia of that

part of Virginia was so held to duty and was usually called minute men when

there was any sudden call for them they were called for and if they were

wanting for a longer time then about thirty days there would be a selection

by draft for so many as was wanting out of the whole who would have to serve

some times for three and or some times for six months. This declarant does

not think that he served in camp for any time in the first year say 1775 but

in all the years which succeeded it up to and during the year 1781 Say he

was thus held to duty six years and a half during which time he does believe

that he performed military duty in camp and under the orders of regularly

appointed officers at least five months per year and in the whole time that

he performed duty as aforesaid not less than two years and six months. He

has no doubt but that he served a longer period but will in order to be

within rather than over the time

(end page 4)

for his service as the time of aforesaid, as before stated he cannot fix the

particular period of his tours of service either as this particular month or

year except that his actual service commenced in the year 1776 ad closed

with the year 1781 or in the beginning of the year 1782 or at least about

that time. His service usually consisted of marching out whenever called by

his officers which is when the English would appear on the Potomac River the

militia would then be called and they would be kept stationed along said

river an or marching up and down its shores watching the enemies movement

ready to oppose them should they attempt to land as also when the enemy

would be expected to cross the county to commit depredations and the period

of service on such occasions would depend on the ??? of the enemy in the

county or the apprehension of the danger from them. These services were so

much of a sameness that owing to the affect of memory as foresaid he cannot

state but for the incidents attending said service but will restate a few of

them of which he has a distinct recollection. Stating at the same time that

he was called on and ordered to several times in each of the years 1776,

1777, 1778, 1779, 1780 and 1781 but his recollections or his various tours??

are rather confused to speak consistently of them. The first town of which

he has a distinct recollection was soon after or about the time

(end page 5)

of the Declaration of Independence. The enemy had ascended the Potomac and

the militia was called on and he marched with the company to which he

belonged which was commanded by Captain John James, Lieutenant John Edwards

Ensign not recollected and although he has recollection of the persons of

his Major and Colonel yet he cannot call to his recollection their names. He

on this occasion marched to the house of one Brent which was on the Potomac

River and burnt by the enemy. The house being burnt or at least set on fire

so that it could not be saved. He with the other militia marched still lower

down the river to a farm called Marlborough where he remained some time. He

was out this time at least three months. There was other militia with him

but he does not recollect anything particular about them except that they

like himself belonged to Virginia. The next place that he has a recollection

of having been stationed was a place called the Horse Pen farm on the

Rappahannock river a short distance above Fredericksburg Virginia. He

remained at this place and moving about from one place to another not less

than three months. His Captain this tour was James Brown his Lieutenant and

Ensign not recollected. There was several Captains and their companies with

him but he does not recollect the names of the officers or anything worth

stating about

(end page 6)

the soldiers the field officers not recollected. The troops on this occasion

was called together in consequence of a report that Talton and his light

horse troops was coming to lay waste the county but Talton did not make his

appearance. The next at which he was stationed was at Fredericksburg

Virginia. He was called at this time to guard a number of prisoners of war

and after remaining a short time at Fredericksburg they were to Winchester

Virginia and he went along and when there guarded them until the militia of

the neighborhood could be called out and organised which made this town at

least four or five months. He was under the command at this time of Captain

Primm the Lieutenant and Ensign not recollected. The Colonel was William

Philips no other field officers recollected. There was several companies in

company but their officers except fore mentioned not recollected. He was

called out into the service when arrangements was making to invest Lord Corn

Wallace and remained out some time but before he arrived at Little York. His

younger brother took his place and went on as this declarants family was in

a condition that demanded his presence. The above are all the minute details

that

(end page 7).

This declarant can in consequence of his loss of memory make yet he will

again repeat that he served many other tours?? of service but he cannot

recollect them so distinct ass to be able to give a correct account of them

nor can he say what particular year any of those tours which he has

described was in but does know that they were performed during the

Revolutionary War and now again repeats that to the best of his recollection

and belief that he did average for the years at least five months per year

and as aforesaid and in all did serve in camp and under orders two years and

six months and he was regularly each time called out according to Law. He

does not recollect ??? did he ever know the number or name of the Regiment

to which he belonged unless the name of it was the Stafford Regiment which

was the name we usually called it when speaking of it to distinguish it from

others. He does not recollect particularly any continental or regular

troops with which he served but was frequently with other the kind at this

time not recollected except that he does recollect that he was a short time

near the French troops as they passed onto Little York. And supposes that

the reason of his recollecting them is that there military equipment was so

splendid and so far excelled anything of the King which he had ever seen.

(end page 8)

That their appearance made a more lasting impression on his mind than any

other troops he was with or near.. he does not recollect anything of

consequence in relation to any of the continental or regular officers. He

may have been with some of them but does not recollect it. He did see

generals Washington, Stubon (sp) and LayFayette (sp) but does not recollect

to have served in company with any of them but supposes that for a while his

officers received orders from LayFayette (sp). He was born sometime in the

beginning of the year A.D. 1748. The month nor day not recollected. He knows

this only by reference to the age of one of his older brothers named Charles

Yelton who is long since dead but whose age is registered in an old bible

now in the possession of his descendents. The difference of the age of his

brother and himself being recollected. He was born in Stafford County

Virginia. He has no record of his age. There was once an old bible of his

father but it has been destroyed by time. He was born in Stafford County

Virginia and resided in the same county and state until the fall of the

year 1785 when he removed to Amherst County same state and there resided

until the fall of the year 1803 when he removed to Iredell County State of

North Carolina and resided there until

(end pg 9)

the spring season of the year 1819 when he removed to the state of Kentucky

and in fall season of said last year he settled in the county of Pendleton

and State of Kentucky where he now resides and has resided ever since. He

has no record evidence of his services and does not recollect that he

received any discharge from the service in writing but thinks that he was

always discharged by word of mouth. If however he ever did receive any

discharge in writing he has lost or destroyed it and does not recollect it.

He does not know of any living person by whom he can prove his services

except that Elizabeth Henson his sister in law and William Yelton this

declarants brother both of whom can speak as to a part but neither of then

can speak as to all of their own knowledge. His sister in law can however

can speak in general terms as to the length of time the declarant was absent

from home for the purpose of serving. She having lived at that time in the

family of this declarant. In all the service this declarant performed he was

a private soldier. He refers to Mr. George Taylor and Charles Tucker his

neighbours who will state what his caracter (sp) as a man of truth and as to

the general belief of the neighbourhood as to his being a revolutionary

soldier. There

The Descendants of Robert Mays - Amherst Co. VA

The following is excerpted from the Family Record of James Henry Mays

published by his son, Lee Mays (Fitzhugh Lee Mays) by the Custom Printing Co.,

Ravenswood, West Virginia in June, 1971.

"James Henry (Jim) Mays (Mayes, Mayse) was born Feb. 15, 1842 in Amherst

County, Virginia, son of Edwin Pierce and Martha Ann Carter Mays. His mother was the

daughter of Job Carter (apparently of Amherst County), whose wife’s maiden name was

Flood. It seems that the latter’s parents, the maternal great-grandfather Flood, migrated

to California before the Civil War (Probably during the 1849 gold rush). Jim’s paternal

grandfather was Pierce Mays. The father, Edwin Pierce, was widowed and remarried

Sally Howard, apparently some time before the Civil War. The family seem to have

been slave holders.

Monroe County, West Virginia, land records show that one Pierce W. Mays

acquired land on Wolf Creek in that county in 1820, and died intestate in 1829. This was

possibly Jim’s grandfather.

Edwin Pierce Mays moved with his family from Amherst County to a farm in

Greenbrier County, near Fort Spring, when Jim was a small boy, in the late 1840’s or

early 1850’s. Later they moved to Pence Springs, Monroe (now Summers) County,

where apparently they spent the rest of their lives. Both parents were buried in Old

Greenbrier Baptist Church Cemetery at Alderson, but their graves are unmarked and

cannot be identified.

Both the paternal and maternal ancestors of James Henry Mays appear to have

come from England before the American Revolution, and to have been of Anglo-Saxon

descent. So far as is known they were in the main farmers, of yeoman stock. Some of

the men apparently fought in the Revolutionary War, as well as in the current Indian

wars. In fact, in his memoirs of the Civil War, written later in life, James H. states that

his grandfather Pierce Mays was killed by Indians, and buried near the mouth of Muddy

Creek in Greenbrier County. Some effort has been made to locate and identify his grave,

but without success.

James Henry Mays served in the Confederate Army throughout the Civil War, as

a volunteer, and was wounded at the Battle of Cold Harbor, near Richmond. Most of his

military service was in Company F, 22nd Virginia Infantry. Besides Cold Harbor, he

fought in the battles of Scary, Carnifex Ferry, Droop Mountain, Newmarket, and other

less well-known engagements, all in what was then Virginia. Among the commanding

officers the writer can remember hearing him mention were: Captains Abbot, Payne,

Thompson and Thurmond; Majors Bailey and Imboden; Colonels Barbee, McCaulsland

(later general), Patton and Tompkins; General Breckenridge, Echols, Floyd, Loring, Wise

and Witcher.

The subject was of the Baptist faith, and was regular and consistent in church

attendance and activities. He was a farmer and carpenter by occupation. He moved to

Jackson County soon after the Civil War, where most of the reminder of his life was

spent. On the way he seems to have lived and worked for indeterminate periods at

Cannelton, Malden, Charleston, and perhaps other places.

James H Mays was married twice. His first marriage, shortly after the Civil War,

was to Cleopatra (Sis), daughter of Jesse and Victoria Hatcher. It seems that marriage

may have been at Cannelton, West Virginia, where probably the wife’s parents and others

of her family lived and were buried. Cleopatra died at the Mays home at Kentuck

(Fletcher), Jackson County, March 25, 1885 at the age of 38, soon after the birth of the

children Ola Cleopatra and her twin sister, the later of which died in infancy. Cleopatra

was buried in the Cleek Cemetery at Kentuck. James H. was remarried June 9, 1886 to

Mary Elizabeth, cousin of his first wife, daughter of Uriah (b. Sept. 8, 1811) and Martha

Ellen Good (second wife, b. Aug. 18, 1828) Hatcher of Kentuck. The Hatcher, and

probably Good, families appear to have come over the mountains before the Civil War,

from Bedford and perhaps Botertourt County, Virginia.

Following are brothers and sisters of James Henry Mays:

Mary, sister, never married. She spent her last years at Huntington, W. Va.,

where she died about 1910.

Pierce II, brother, married Molly Newman. He enlisted during the Civil War,

became ill, was sent home and eventually died from his illness. He was buried at

Alderson, now WVA.

Elizabeth (Lizzie) sister, born about 1845, probably in Amherst Co., Virginia.

She married Joseph Hines. Her children included two sons, Luther and Otey, and two

daughters, Mattie and McKendree.

Lucy J, sister, probably younger than Lizzie. She married Henry Craft Feb. 10,

1863. Her family included: two sons, James and William Craft, and a daughter, Mrs.

William Hillis.

Margaret (Mag), sister, married Giles Burdet (Burdette).

Hugh Albert, brother, probably born in Monroe (now Summers) Co., sometime

before the Civil War. (Note from Valerie Burd: I have found Hugh listed in the 1870

Summers Co. census as 17 years of age, making his birthdate abt. 1853) He married

Virginia, daughter of Reuben and Sally Harrison of Goldtown, Jackson Co. They had

three sons: one died in infancy, Virgil, a bachelor; and Rennie; also three daughters;

Emma, Verna, and Virginia. Hugh died in Richmond about 1930.

Joseph, half brother, was born in Monroe (now Summers) Co, about the time of,

or soon after, the Civil War. (Note: 1870 census lists him as 7, putting his birthdate abt.

1864) His mother was Sally Howard Mays. She spent most of his life in West Virginia,

was married three times, widowed twice. His last wife was a widow, Bessie McCormick

(McCormack), who survived him. He died at his home at Cross Lanes, W. Va., about

1955."

End of excerpt. The 1870 census also showed a half-sister, Amanda S., born abt.

1863. She was 7 years old in 1870. Sarah Howard Mays in 1870 was 38, making her

date of birth abt. 1832. Edwin Mays had apparently died before the 1870 census was

taken, but he was alive at the end of the war in 1865, when James Henry returned home,

because in his memoirs Jim recounts how much his father had aged in the few years of

the war. In the 1860 Monroe Co. census, Edwin Mays is listed as being 40 years old, so

he would have been born abt. 1820. He lists his real estate value at $650 and his personal

property value at $116. His wife Martha has already died. (She died of consumption in

Monroe County. Her death record states she was 34 years old, but lists date of birth as

1823 and date of death as Aug. 28, 1854. It lists her husband as Edward P. Mays.) The

census lists children Mary A, 22; Pierce W., 20; James H, 18; Martha E, 16; Lucy J, 14;

Margaret, 11; and Hugh A, 9.

In his memoirs, "Four Years for Old Virginia" James Henry Mays says that he

enlisted at age 19 at Rocky Point in Monroe Co, Virginia in the spring of 1861 in Co. F,

22nd Virginia Infantry with 100 other young men. He came, he says, from a middle-class

southern farmhouse and his family were slave holders. He wrote his memoirs on scraps

of paper that were later transcribed by his son, Lee.

I have traced the family history as follows: Robert MAYS, b. abt. 1731, possibly

in Stafford Co., Va, d. July 18,1808 in Amherst Co. Va., married 1. Elizabeth BOLLING

(b. ? in St. Paul's Parish, Stafford, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary Latham

BOLLING of Stafford Co ) on Dec. 27, 1756 in Stafford Co. Va.; married 2. Susanna

WADE (dter of Pierce and Mary BALLENGER WADE) on Sept. 4, 1780 in Amherst

Co.

The children of Robert and Elizabeth were: Benjamin MAYS, b. Sept. 10, 1757 in

Stafford Co, d abt. May 25, 1835 in Iredell Co., NC; William, b 1759 Stafford Co

married Jane SWINNEY 3 Mar. 1788 in Amherst Co; James, b abt 1763 Stafford Co

married Lucrisa WADE 21 Jan 1786; Richard, b. abt 1765 Stafford Co married Pattey

EVANS Aug. 10, 1793; Sarah, b. abt. 1767 in Stafford Co., married William YELTON;

Mary, b ABT 1769 Stafford Co. married her cousin Joseph MAYS on Oct. 3, 1791;

Rhoda, b abt 1771 Stafford Co. married Hansley CARPENTER Nov. 3, 1797.

The children of Robert and Susanna were: Joseph B. Mays, b abt 1781 in Amherst

Co. married 1. Elizabeth Williamson 24 Jan 1809 Amherst. They had children Nancy

W., Beverly W., Taliaferro W. and Robert B. 2. He married Sally Hatten on 20 Oct.

1817, Amherst.

Jesse, b abt 1782 married Nancy ? They had moved to Giles Co TN by

1824, when he authorizes a friend to handle his part in his father's estate.

Ballenger, b. 1784 married Mary "Polly" WRIGHT , daughter of Tommy and

Cynthia Mayes Wright of Bedford Co and granddaughter of James and Mary Mays of

Bedford Co, on Dec. 21, 1811 Ballenger died in Augusta Co after 1860 census, which

listed his age at 76 and his wife's age at 68 and son William at 33 .

I've been told Mary Polly Wright died in 1868 in Augusta Co. of asthma, son John

signing the death certificate. She also could have had a son David, who was 29 in 1860

and living near her, and a son Jubal, who was 37 in 1860 Augusta census.

Mary "Polly" married Thomas Williamson on 4 May 1811 in Amherst.

Pierce b. abt 1783 married 1. Polly FULCHER Sept. 30, 1805, married 2. Nancy

Robinson 25 Jan. 1821, Thomas Hill surety .

The children of Pierce and Polly MAYS were John J., Robert H., Editha, Edwin

and Maria MAYS. I've recently been told there was another daughter, Mary Ann, of the

second marriage. She was born about 1822 and married Addison Perry. Pierce is shown

living in Augusta Co. in 1810 Census and in Rockingham Co. in the 1820 Census. In

1830, after dying in Monroe Co. intestate, some of Pierce’s children were placed under

the guardianship of a Robert WINGFIELD. I have found information that Pierce actually

died abt. 1823 at the mouth of Muddy Creek in Monroe Co. while serving in the militia.

His second wife, Nancy Robinson Mayes , married John Alderson ( youngest son of

Elder John Anderson a Baptist minister who founded Alderson West Virginia) and had

six children from this second marriage before her death.

Edwin MAYS married Martha Ann CARTER, dter of Job CARTER b. Aug 22,

1796 in Amherst and Adeline FLOOD CARTER who themselves were married on Dec.

27, 1817 in Amherst. Job CARTER's parents were Peter CARTER, son of Solomon

CARTER and Mary Ann BICKLEY, and Elizabeth "Betsy" SANDIDGE, daughter of

John SANDIDGE and Keziah GATEWOOD. Keziah's parents were Henry

GATEWOOD and Dorothy DUDLEY. John SANDIDGE's parents were William

SANDIDGE and Anne PULLIAM. The will of William SANDIDGE is in Spotsylvania

County VA WILLS, Book A, page 443, dated March 10, 1746. In it, he mentions his

son John, "his youngest son".

A Sketch of the Taylor Family

Pg. 1

The following was written by Mrs. Mattie Yelton Taylor and published in the Pendleton Reformer of Butler, KY, sometime in the late 1880s.

There is not, perhaps, in the entire vocabulary of English names, one more common than Taylor. I have been told, however, that the majority of the Taylors must run back through England to Scotland to find the root of their family tree. While our family thus finds its origin, I have met persons of our name who did not trace their ancestry many generations back and not related to us, yet they resemble members of our family. The portrait of General Zachariah Taylor strikingly resembles some members of our family. The prominent nose and large mouth are characteristics of the Taylor portraits in our family.

According to tradition and manuscripts, our Anglo-American ancestry begins with Dr. Robert Taylor who was born in London, England sometime at or near the beginning of the eighteenth century. His parents were born in Scotland and came to London to avoid religious persecution. Their son, Robert, was a graduate of Oxford college, Oxfordshire, England. This we get from manuscript found among father Taylor's old papers, and now tradition weaves a wonderful web of romance in Dr. Taylor's eventful life. Having thoroughly equipped himself in the repeutics, he gallantly launches the life boat of adventure. Tradition says he took a ship for the Indian Isles, but the vessel was captured by pirates, and all were put to death except the good Doctor, who was spared that he might give his captors the benefit of his craft.

Eventually, he landed in Philadelphia and established himself as a physician. It was not long till he was favored with a call. A man had been thrown from a horse and seriously hurt. When he (Dr. Taylor) arrived at the scene of the disaster, he was surprised to see a handsome young woman playing the part of a surgeon. She had witnessed the fall from her window, hastened to the rescue and substituting her stocking for a bandage and her pocket knife for a lancet, had punctured the right vein and the breath of life again came to the unfortunate horseman. It was there that the doctor met his fate, fell in love and found a wife. The fair surgeon's name was Philadelphia Adkins but was soon changed to Mrs. S. Robert Taylor. The Adkins part of the name was appreciated so highly that it is still in the Taylor family. Philadelphia was dropped after several generations, as those who bore it always died in childhood and superstition cast it away.

Robert Taylor's first daughter was named Philadelphia; she is buried in Mason?? County. My grandfather's Philadelphia sleeps in the old home graveyard. Two other Philadelphias rest with the silent members of the old Kentucky home near by.

By the above named romantic union, we learn from the manuscript there were four children born: William and John, Judith and Nancy. Judith bloomed in the garden of time four summers and was transplanted to the fair fields of immortality.

Some of our family say that Dr. Taylor went to the West Indies to recuperate his health and died there. His great grandson, Robert Adkins Taylor, gave his version that he sailed for England to look after an inheritance; the ship, Taylor, credentials and all were lost at sea.

The next account we have of the Taylor family is in Prince William County, VA. Dr. Taylor's widow married a man named Parker. The oldest son, William, inherited his father's estate, consisting of much land and Negroes. The second son, John, grandfather of the Kentucky branch of Taylors, was a lame man who taught school for his living.

William the head of the F.F.V. branch of the Taylor family married a Miss Hannah Brown, by whom he had eleven children. He remained in his father's old estate, I have been told that there are many descendants in Virginia, some in Stafford County. John, head of the Kentucky branch, married a Miss Elizabeth Summers, whose mother's maiden name was Edwards, thereby connecting us with the New York Edwards estate.

Nancy Taylor, sister to William and John, married a man named Hull and lived on the banks of the James River, near its mouth. She had only one child, a daughter who married a man named Jackson. This part of the history comes from one of my aunts, who wishes to claim kin with Stonewall Jackson, of Confederate fame.

We must now begin to copy from father Taylor's record and other old papers.

Pg. 2

Robert Taylor, the main subject of this sketch, was the oldest son of Dr. Robert Taylors' son John and was born in Prince William County, VA, July 28, 1758. Two years later his brother John was born and afterwards a sister, Philadelphia, who died in childhood.

When Robert Taylor was twelve years of age, his father moved to Frederick County, VA where he remained until after the close of the Revolution. In October, 1779, father Taylor arrived at manhood's estate, came with Col. Calloway and others to Kentucky(?) to establish a frontier outpost, making Stroude's Station their headquarters. From this point young Robert roamed at will with his gun for companion. This was the happy hunting ground of the Redmen; by his rights of preemption and guaranteed by the Great Spirit. He was not disposed to yield to the paleface cause quietly. In March of 1780 the Indians began depredations by killing Col. Calloway and _____ Rollins at Fort Boonesborough. This of course roused the ire of the white man.

This attack of the savages made it necessary for the white man to keep his powder dry and to hold himself in readiness for self defense at a minutes warning. Father Taylor, havinf roamed alone twenty to thirty miles from the station, became a willing and active participant in the scouting parties necessary for border life protection.

During the summer of that year, the British and Indians captured Martin's and Ruddle's Stations. Grandfather Taylor with a party of volunteers under Capt. John Holden and led by Col. Benj. Moran, joined Gen. Clark at the confluence of the Licking River and marching to the Indian towns on the Miami and Mad Rivers, burning them, with their cornfields. After this adventure in Indian warfare, he returned to Kentucky. In November of that year, while Daniel Boone and his brother were hunting, Indians fired on them, killing the brother and pursuing Daniel, who narrowly escaped to tell the tale.

A company was organized the next day under Capt. Gatliff. Father Taylor remembered the place described by Boone, having seen it on a hunting excursion, and went with the party as guide to the place. The dead body was found, scalped and partly eaten by the wildcats. The sad burial completed, they started in pursuit of the murders who, with characteristic cunning made their escape.

In January, 1781, having lived a frontier life for fifteen months, he returned to his father's in Frederick County, VA. In July 1781, he volunteered under Capt. Thomas Perry to assist in dispersing a band of Tories along the south bank of the Potomac. They were led by Gen. Daniel Morgan and consummated the undertaking with a sprinkling of blood-letting on the part of the Tories. The following August, he volunteered under capt. George Bell and Lieut. Henry Catlett, acting as orderly, went to Yorktown where he remained until the surrender of Cornwallis. He assisted in guarding prisoners to Winchester VA and was discharged by proclamation but afterwards assisted in again gusrding prisoners from Winchester to Lancaster Barracks, in Pennsylvania with Capt. Haskill, Lieut. Jenkins and Ensign McGuire. This ends his history as a soldier of the Revolution.

In January, 1782 he married Miss Mary Summers of Kraderic County, VA., and in November 1783, his father John Taylor, came with his two sons, Robert and John, to make their future home in the wilds of Kentucky. Father Taylor had tasted the wild border life with its exciting scenes, yet, like a certain editor, he thought Kentucky good enough for any living man and even some dead ones had _______ place.

From their home in Virginia, they came to Stroude's Station where they remained until the fall of 1784 when they removed to Tate's Creek in Madison County. During the summer of 1785, an encampment of Indians was discovered above the three forks of the Kentucky River. He joined a company of horsem*n led by Capt. Christopher Ervine and Lieut. Estell but when they reached the camp, no Indians were seen, and the party returned.

In the fall of 1785, Father Taylor moved to Washington, near Limestone in Mason County. His old manuscript says during the following summer, Indians were very troublesome, capturing boats on the Ohio, stealing horses and whatever suited their fancy. Again it became necessary for the settlers to take up arms in self-defense and many skirmishes in which Father Taylor engaged with Capt. Baker, Kenton, Helm and others.

In September of that year, it became necessary to organize against marauding bands of Indians once more. Led by Col. Logan, he volunteered under Capt. Simon Kenton. They marched to the Indian towns on the Mad River, fought a battle in which both whites and Redmen fell, captured about thirty Indians and reduced their towns to ashes. This closes his Indian warfare, so far as old and stained papers give us light. These papers are copies of his application for a pension as a soldier of the Revolutionary War. One more item from tradition, I have been told that, when his second child was but two days old, the mother sat up half the night moulding bullets from pewter plates to help defend Fort Boonesborough against an attack of Indians.

Pg. 3

Now we come to things that happened only a hundred years ago. In December 1797, having purchased several thousand acres of government land, then an unbroken wilderness, he moved from Mason County to a cabin he had built on the west bank of Flour Creek, nearly opposite the beautiful residence of Col. Jackson Drucker. Soon after, he built a two-story sawed log house, near where now stands the old brick house which was completed, according to the story of one of my aunts, in the Autumn of 1819, the year his youngest son was born. In his new home state, he was destined to pass through waters of sorrow both deep and wide. In November 1807, a daughter of seventeen years, died; two days later, a second daughter nineteen years old, passed to the unseen world. Death not yet satisfied, a few days later, bore away a little six year old boy, the yawning grave closing over his remains beside his sisters. These were indeed days of sore trials, but more appalling sorrows awaited him.

In the following spring, on the 19th of May, the day closed sultry. In the western horizon, clouds were sending up frequent flashes of lightening. On they rolled in terrific grandeur. Deep rumbling thunder heralded the coming storm. Quickly the family had gathered beneath the sheltering roof, louder and more terrifying came the startling peels of thunder. The mother holding within her sheltering arms little three year old Sophia. Calmly sat the brave father and husband near her side, and then a blinding flash and startling crash and the stillness of death reigned. Recovering Consciousness, father Taylor found himself on the floor. His first words were "Is there anyone alive in the house?" "I am father," plaintively came from his son Robert, The electric flashes partly revealed the heartrending scene. A candle was lighted and quickly revealed the true terrors of death. Prone at his feet was his beloved wife, Mary, the love of his youth; and their jewel, the amethyst little Sophia, calmly sleeping the sleep of death. A few feet away lay Elijah, his fifteen year old boy, who a few hours before had cheerily followed the plow. He too, was cold in death.

The scene beggars description, we turn away to weep. Few mortals have been subjected to a greater trial. But a brave heart beat within his breast and nerves of steel held away to bear him over the stormful wave of sorrow, while an abiding faith in Him who reigns on high, gave him a "present help in this time of trouble". My aunt Nancy Griffing, God Bless her memory, related this startling event to me when she was near four score years of age. She was about twenty years old when she witnessed the sad scene. Said she; "I never in my life remember such a night of storm". Storm after storm followed in rapid succession all through the night. All night long the angry heavens bombarded the trembling earth with glittering flashes and roaring crash. During servere thunder storms at night, the weird scene often passes in my imagination before me; the upturned faces of the dead in the lurid lightening's glimmer; the awe-stricken friends standing around in tearful silence; only the sobs of the bereft husband and father are heard above the raging storm. This trying ordeal was, perhaps, the saddest episode of his eventful life, but with Christian philosophy and fortitude, he lived for the living and waited God's time to call him to join the loved ones on the other shore.

Of his family by his first wife, Mary, twelve in number, nine are buried in the old graveyard here, one in Mason County, one in Kenton County and one in Indianapolis. He afterwards married Miss Fannie Yelton, by whom he had five children. His youngest daughter Mrs. Amelia Morris, now nearly eighty-one years old, lives near Vernon in Marion County, IL. His youngest son, Anthony W. Taylor, named for one of his father's comrades in Indian warfare, lives at his father's home and was seventy-eight years old, December 18, 1897, just one hundred years from the date his father made the place his home. Note from Anthony Wayne Taylor: Father Taylor married Mrs. Alice Vader Thomasson for his third wife. She died six years before his death.

After all the ups and downs in life, the wings of time gently wafted him down to the grand old age of ninety-three years, four months and fourteen days. Late on the evening of December 11, 1851, he quietly passed over the border land stream to join the many loved ones gone before. "Three worn and weary wheels of life stood still, the long jouney ended and the fatigued and dust covered pilgrim was at last home."

The veteran of the cross and of his country's wars had filled his mission and retired. Almost a century of sunshine and shadows mingled with storms had passed over his devoted head. I have been there by my aunts and they are high authority with me that grandfather Taylor's wedding was the second performed in Kentucky with one of Col. Calloway's family leading. Grandfather Taylor sleeps in the old family burial place among many kindred sleepers. There rest the remains of his mother (his father John was buried in Mason County) there rests his three wives and twelve of his seventeen children. His brother John and wife, with many of their descendants sleep here as well. His cousin George Taylor and his wife, with a host of their descendants sleep in the same place. It is, as it were, a grand family reunion.

Pg. 4

George Taylor came from Stafford County, VA after the beginning of this century and brought the first school to this settlement. He was the son of William Taylor, who inherited Dr. Robert Taylor's estate. At his father's death, uncle George went to Virginia and brought the negroes to Kentucky, leaving quite a sum from which he received an annuity during his life and at his death, this sum was divided among his children. Two of his sons, Robert and John, their respective ages being seventy-eight and seventy-six. One son, A.D. Taylor lives in Missouri and is eighty years old. The youngest daughter, Mrs. Lucinda Montgomery, lives with her son Alexander, on Willow Pike near the Campbell County line. She is seventy-two and was a playmate of mine during childhood. The descendants of Dr. Robert Taylor are scattered all over the United States and if the Virginia branch with grandfather's start of eleven, was as prolific as was his brother John's start of two, there must be Taylors and kindred enough to deliver Cuba from her present troubles.

Father Taylor was reared in the Baptist faith, but in 1826 he joined the Christian Church. In this year the first congregation of Disciples in this county was organized in the west room of his house and he became its first Elder As long as his strength permitted he took an active part in advancing the cause of his Master. He lived to see all of his children and many of his neighbors embrace the same faith and many of his grandchildren are members of the same church today. The lot on which the present church stands was a gift from this venerable man.

Mrs. L. Harnady, granddaughter of father Taylor, who is now sojourning with Miss Fannie Taylor, another granddaughter living at Flour Creek, is the leading lady of this sketch of grandchildren and the one who requested me to write this history. She hails from Indiana, where some of the great-grandsons of father Taylor are leading men in their great state. Among his many grandsons here are Jesse S. Taylor, Jasper H. Taylor of Covington, Ferdinand Taylor and last but not lease, his great grandson, Joel Taylor of Butler, Kentucky. There is one more grandson whom I nearly forgot, Robert Adkin Taylor of Fort Wayne, IN. In Illinois are three grandsons, James Taylor Norris, Alonzo Norris and Robert Norris. Ferdinand Taylor Sr. was a son of father Taylor and father to Miss Fannie named above.

(AMELIA4 YELTON, ISABEL3 HINSON, EDMOND2, JOSEPH1) was born December 31, 1780 in Bull Run Creek, Prince William Co., Virginia, and died July 22, 1870 in Harris Creek, Pendleton, Kentucky. He married ELIZABETH RUSH April 01, 1803 in Pendleton County, Kentucky, daughter of THOMAS RUSH. She was born 1778 in Albermarle Co., Virginia, and died August 12, 1870 in Pendleton County, Kentucky.

Notes for WILLIAM ELLIS:

WILLIAM ELLIS - Private in Capt. William Huchison's Company, Col. William Montjoy's Regiment, Kentucky Mounted Volunteer Militia. Mustered in at Newport, Ky on 31 Aug. 1813 and mustered out 08 Nov. 1813. Buried in the Ellis Cemetery, Pendleton County, born 31 Dec. 1780, died 22 July 1870. Did not claim a pension.

Notes for ELIZABETH RUSH:

Elizabeth (Betsy) Rush, born 1778 in Albemarle County, Virginia; died August 12, 1870 in Pendleton County, Kentucky; married William Ellis April 1, 1803; born December 31, 1780; died July 22, 1870.

Notes for Elizabeth (Betsy) Rush:

The following information came from a letter sent from James C. Moule, Washington, D.C. to Barbara Rush Jenkins, Goshen, Ohio on January 21, 1998. This is a copy of that letter:

"I recently purchased Janet Pease's abstracted marriage records of Pendleton County, Kentucky. When I saw the marriage record for Elizabeth Rush and William Ellis in 1803, it started me thinking. After having looked at a lot of marriage bonds, it seems that most commonly the bondsman was the father of the bride or, if he was dead, the brother of the bride. If not that, the bondsman was often the brother-in-law of the bride. The bondsman for the marriage of Elizabeth Rush and William Ellis was George Turner. If Elizabeth was the sister of John and Peter, I would have expected the bondsman to be Peter or John Rush. Since that was not the case, it seemed that Elizabeth Rush was probably unrelated. Then I remembered that I had been studying the Turners and looked up my records. George Turner was also from Albemarle County, Virginia, and was John Rush's brother-in-law. (George Turner married Anna Maupin, sister of Margaret Maupin, John Rush's wife.) While the evidence is only circ*mstantial, I am now inclined to agree with you that the mysterious Elizabeth Rush of Pendleton County was probably John and Peter's sister."

Another interesting possibility linking Elizabeth Rush as the sister of John and Peter Rush was found by Barbara Rush Jenkins. Elizabeth Rush Ellis' daughter Sarah married Ambrose Fields on June 21, 1831. On the marriage bond (from Janet Pease's "Kentucky County Court Records, Pendleton County, KY"), the bondsman listed was John S. Rush, the grandson of John Rush and Margaret Maupin. Sarah Ellis was the first cousin once removed of John S. Rush, making it highly probable at this point that Elizabeth "Betsy" Rush was in fact the sister of John and Peter Rush.

More About Elizabeth (Betsy) Rush:

Fact 1: 1850, She and husband William are listed in the Pendleton County, Kentucky census.

Notes for William Ellis:

Barbara Rush Jenkins has in her possession a copy of an article from "The Falmouth Outlook" on the Ellis Genealogy, taken from the library in Cynthiana, Kentucky. On page two of the article, the writer Hayden Ellis stating that he was the grandson of William Ellis, wrote down the following on March 1, 1934:

"William, the second son of Rhodum Ellis, was born December 31, 1780 and died July 22, 1870. He was married to Elizabeth Rush (misspelled as "Rust" by the Falmouth Outlook) in 1803. She was a cousin to Thomas Rush (misspelled as "Rust" again), who lived on the east side of Licking River opposite Catawba Station." We know that the Marriage records in Pendleton County, Kentucky transcribe the marriage of William Ellis to Betsy Rush, not Rust. The original bond book in the Pendleton County Courthouse bears this out. .

Wiley H. Ellis

Wiley Humphrey Ellis was born on July 8, 1865, at Pleasant Hill, the son of James and Sarah Beckett Ellis, eighth of ten children, two of whom survive him. He departed this life April 24, 1946, at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati, after an illness of almost one year.

His early life and school days were spent around Pleasant Hill. In young manhood he united with the Pleasant Hill Christian Church. He lived at the home farm with his mother and sister until they passed away. Then he moved in 1920 to Indiana, where he lived for a time with his nephew, Thaddeus Pribble, and later to the farm on Manchester Pike, here he lived with his nephew, Galen Pribble, and family.

Two sisters, Mrs. Florence Jones of Amarillo, Texas, and Mrs. Stella Thomasson of Ft. Thomas, survive him, as well as 11 nieces and nephews and a host of friends and other relatives.

Falmouth Outlook Friday 31 August 1923 Vol. 17 No. 13 Pg. 4 Col. 4

HISTORICAL SKETCH OF CO. D. 4TH REGIMENT, OF THE CONFEDERATE ARMY

Leland L. Barton, Prominent Lawyer of Washington, D. C. Writes interesting

sketch of Company in which many soldiers from this county were enlisted.

Leland L. Barton, formerly of this county, and many years ago editor of a

paper published here, and also principal in the public schools of Falmouth, has

written a most interesting historical account of Company D. Fourth Regiment

Kentucky Cavalry, Confederate Army, and the Outlook is exceedingly fortunate

in having the opportunity to publish it. The article follows:

In writing a personal letter to an old friend in Falmouth, I concluded to

surprise him with a historical list of names of the members of Company D Fourth

Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry of the Confederate Army, which list names in the

history of Pendleton County; and the names were of people from all parts of

the county.

The fact caused me to think that it might be an acceptable contribution as

news, yet history, for all the people of the county. The enlistment date was

September 5, 1862, so in a few days that historical event could be celebrated

as the sixty-first anniversary. One of the first stations of the Company

was Saylersville, Magoffin County. The first service was around Cumberland

Gap. They were in forty-three engagements with the enemy, besides skirmishes.

The Regiment was in the siege of Knoxville, Tenn. The tragic death of the

great cavalry raider, General John H. Morgan, occurred at Greenville, Tenn.,

November 1864. The Fourth Regiment Kentucky Cavalry was gained such momentum

in fighting that after General Lee had surrendered what was in effect the last

sword of the rebellion to General Grant, at Appomattox, it fought the battle

of Marion, VA. It surrendered at Mt. Sterling, KY on April 30, 1865, and

the men were paroled and allowed to return home. The officers were allowed to

retain their side arms.

Later I shall endeavor to give you some account of the thrilling and

historical episode in the history of our part of Kentucky, meeting the capture of

Federal troops at Cynthiana, KY, in 1862; of the haste of General Morgan was in

to get the benefit of his prisoners and at the same time get away from the

troops coming hot from Cincinnati. He delivered certain officer prisoners at

Falmouth, just after the battle.

In spite of such modernities of moving pictures, flying machines, autos,

wireless transmission, no sociological event in all the world so held the

attention, the breath, the heart, the head, with the people of Pendleton County as

the tragic, awful, heroic and thrilling events of the Civil War. It was

impossible in the inner workings of one’s own mind, not to take sides. Brothers

and sisters fought in fratricidal strife. With individuals as with the

nation, issues were matters of life and death. If we wish to profit by the lessons

of history, our reading should include some of the philosophy.

The members of the company of brave men who fought and sacrificed in that

heroic struggle, on the Confederate side, were household words in Pendleton

County in the earlier times. Some may yet live, but most of their names are but

memories. While they were but mere boys when they enlisted they, like the

soldiers of all wars, became the leading citizens of their country. It would be

hard to realize that there have been any campaigns in history that endured

greater privations and sufferings than these troops in comparison to which the

Spanish American War might be spoken of ironically, as that titanic struggle

of 1898.

The Pendleton County, Kentucky, boys rendezvoused on the upper waters of the

Licking River, thence moved to southwest Virginia, and operated in the three

states of Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee, and was under Col. Humphrey

Marshall, and some aided the brilliant cavalry raider, General John H. Morgan.

The colonel was Henry L. Gitner, of Carrollton, KY.

Editor’s Note – The note in the above article in reference to William

Frances Corbin was one of the outstanding events of the Civil War, although not

many of our readers are aware of this fact. The Federal Army issued an order

in 1862 forbidding recruiting Confederate Soldiers in all neutral territory.

The order stated that all those found guilty would be considered as spies. In

face of this order, William Francis Corbin, who had been promoted to a

Lieutenant came back to Campbell (his native county) and Pendleton County to

recruit soldiers for his company. Lieut. Corbin was arrested by Federal soldiers

at Demossville in Pendleton County. He was tried by court martial and

sentenced to be shot. Everything possible was done to save the life of Lieut.

Corbin. His sister, Miss Corbin, as a last resort went to Washington and appealed

to President Lincoln in person. This is possibly the only case where

Lincoln ever turned down a woman's plea. He told Miss Cobin that if he reprieved

her brother it would demoralize the morale of the army. Word was sent from

Confederate Headquarters that if Lieut. Corbin was shot, retaliation would be

resorted to and two Federal soldiers of like rank would be shot. Answer was

given out that Gen. Fitzhue Lee, then a prisoner in Washington, would be shot.

Thus ended what might have caused the bloodiest war of all time.

iii. FLORENCE VIRGINIA YELTON, b. November 21, 1856, Garnersville, Pendleton County, Kentucky; d. December 09, 1934, Garnersville, Pendleton County, Kentucky; m. CHARLES THOMAS WILSON, June 11, 1874.

Notes for FLORENCE VIRGINIA YELTON:

Again the golden bells of heaven have rung and called home one of our most beloved women, Mrs. C. T. Wilson.

Florence Virginia Yelton was born at Gardnersville Nov. 21, 1856, and passed away Dec. 9, 1934. She was married to Charles Thomas Wilson on June 11, 1874, and to this union ten children were born, five of whom survive: Jesse of Springfield, Ohio, Charles and Berry of near Falmouth, Mrs. Eva Brann of Gardnersville and Mary at home. She also leaves a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren to morn her loss.

Just a little over a year ago her husband, C. T. Wilson, passed on and our one great comfort now is that they are together again, for their life together on this earth was an ideal one, never being separated more than a week at a time in their 59 years of married life.

To say that she was an ideal mother, friend and neighbor would be speaking lightly, for she was loved by everyone, and was always patient, kind and true to everyone. So we are thinking that she is not dead, she is just away.

She was borne to her place of rest by six of her grandsons, Harold Wilson, Herbert Wilson, Joe Wilson, Howard Brann, Floyd Roberts and Wilson Johnting. Flower girls were six granddaughters, Marcella Kelly, Edna and Ruby Wilson, Mildred Carr, Katherine Wilson and Helen Wilson.

Bro. Windley paid a loving tribute to this wonderful couple who have passed on, and I only hope that their traits of character may be carried on and on to the end of time, and I'm sure that their living here has made it a better world for the rest of us to carry on.

*On December 3, 1866, the Will of William C. Jenner was entered into records by the Campbell County (KY) clerk. In the will he mentions his wife, Helen, sons, John James Jenner, George W. Jenner and a grandson, Henry Colman Yelton. Charles Maddox Jr. was executor.

(Information given by Ronald Strickley 12-2000)

Fact: John James & William had a sister named Martha.

* Due to dates and proximity, it is most likely that the wife of Coleman G. Yelton, was indeed Martha Jenner and their son Henry was the grandson mentioned in this will. Henry's middle initial, E., may have been written wrong and may have been C.

Jasper N. Yelton, age 67 years, died Friday, February 10th, at his home

in Cleveland, Ohio. He had been ill with heart trouble for the past two

years, and for the past six months he had been confined to his bed.

Jasper N. Yelton was born at Butler, KY, where he spent the greater part

of his life. He was united in marriage to Miss. Dora Caldwell, daughter of

the late A. L. Caldwell, on August 12, 1880. She passed away on November 29,

1911, while they were residents of Knoxville, TN. Some time later he married

Mr. Yelton was a member of the Christian church and a gentleman of high

ideals, honest and true to every obligation. For many years he was in

business at Butler, and was known to every man, woman and child in that

vicinity. He had a faculty for making friends and holding them, and the

announcement of his death was received with much sorrow by the people of the

northern part of the county where he was best known.

Mr. Yelton was as kind and gentle as a child, always looking on the

bright side of life, and had a word of cheer for all those with whom he came

in contact.

The remains were brought back to his old home at Butler on Sunday, and

after funeral services he was laid to rest in the Butler cemetery.

All the children with the exception of Everett, of New York, attended

the funeral.
