A groundbreaking study reveals that treating all blocked arteries with stents during a heart attack significantly reduces the risk of mortality and future cardiovascular events compared to focusing solely on the culprit artery. The study, published in The Lancet, analyzed data from six large, multicenter randomized clinical trials involving 8,836 heart attack patients. It demonstrated that patients who received complete revascularization had a 24% lower rate of cardiovascular death and a 15% lower rate of all-cause death compared to those treated with culprit-only stenting. Additionally, the risk of new heart attacks was reduced by a quarter.
