Hello from Langley BC

Been hanging out for a few weeks now, thought it is time for a formal hello. As you probably guess from my user name, I play a lot of poker, but that's a story for another time.

I am new to airguns, even though I bought a Crosman American Classic over 30 years ago when I was a teenager. I remember wanting to build a pellet trap before shooting pellets, but never did. I did dry fire it a few times, then it sat on the shelf and I went off to university. It probably sat there for almost 3 decades, but it is no longer there in my mom's basem*nt shelf when I looked for it this summer while visiting Toronto, so one of my many nieces and nephews probably took it.

I became interested in airguns again due to rats around our duck pens. Tried different traps, even poison, nothing seems to work. Do I got a Ruger Youth Explorer off Craigslist and shot a bunch of them. Seems to have helped, but loading a single shot at a time seems to be pain, so I sold that and planned to get a Daisy 953 or something similar. I made a post about getting the PA house brand break barrel because got hit with unexpected expenses after I sold the Ruger, but luck will have it I found a great deal on the 953 at PA, and am very happy with it after trying it out last night. I shot off around 90 pellets in an hour, hell lots of fun. Now if only this rain will stop, I can go hunt myself some rats.

Oh, I also bought a Crosman Vigilante when it came on sale @ Canadian Tire a few weeks ago.

Looking forward to learning lots from you guys.

Fairly formal FT Match. Sitting or standing. 10-25 meters. Lots of fun and lots of nice people! Runs from 9-3 the last Sunday of every month except December and January. You'll get the opportunity to shoot the rifle of your dreams, or the next "Got to have"! Hello from Langley BC (9)

I am not sure what a FT Match is exactly, but it sounds like fun to do some target shooting and meeting some people. I am pretty much a complete newbie and probably not a good shot compared to everyone else, but if others don't mind, I won't be embarrassed.

Is there an entry fee, and/or membership requirement? Is it rifle only, or do you do pistol shooting as well?

Thanks,
PD

Just found the AAFTA handbook. Sounds like a blast.

Field Target, knock down metal targets from 10-40 meters. Primarily rifle, but you can use your pistol to really challenge yourself!
$5 fee for the day! Lots of fun and BS to go with the shooting!

It's not just the FT match either (sometimes two rounds), there's plinking/sighting in time before and more random shooting after, at whatever targets you care to bring with you so long as they don't leave a big mess like broken glass. It's on an archery range at the Mission Rod & Gun Club so we have to avoid hitting their target stands but otherwise lots of places to put various sorts of plinking objects or paper targets. We've even put the odd thing way up the sand and gravel embankment at times, at the back end of the lot between 50 and 60 metres out. A nice spot to shoot. If it's raining too much we gather in the lower archery range under a shed roof and set up some knock-down steel targets and other things to shoot as far out as about 45 or 50 metres.

There's usually a pistol or two brought out for plinking. I haven't been involved in a 'formal' pistol FT round yet, but look forward to giving it a try with my Pardini.

No one's there to discourage anyone else, a jolly bunch of fellas just gathered to enjoy a day of shooting. Whatever you want to bring to shoot will be just fine. Guns show up anywhere from the basic 2240 level up to $4,000 or more for some European FT models and everything between. Starts around 9, usually wraps up by 2 or so.

I recommend it too! I've been going out there for over a year now, and rarely miss a shoot. Don't worry, it'll be really easy to get started, and you'll be offered as much help as you need. Practice with that 953, and I'm sure you can do just fine.

I just warn you that once you see / try some of the nicer offerings, it's pretty hard not to fall into the black hole!

I was happy to start back up with a break barrel. That lasted about 2 months. Then I modded a Crosman 2240, which was fun. I think it was a total of maybe 4 months from the break barrel purchase that I bought my first PCP. I fell in hard and fast, and don't regret a thing!
