Lok Sabha Election Results Analysis Live Updates: As curtains closed on the Lok Sabha elections, the NDA looked set for a third term with 293 wins. The BJP, on its own, stopped short of a majority mark with 240 wins, which means Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar could be the men who would prop up Narendra Modi in New Delhi. As BJP leans on allies, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Janata Dal (United) have decided to press for the post of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

The 2024 Verdict is as much about the INDIA bloc story. Defying all predictions, the Opposition put up a power fight and claimed 233 seats. The Congress party almost doubled its 2019 tally, grabbing 99 seats. Party leader Rahul Gandhi recorded twin wins in Kerala’s Wayanad and Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli with a margin of over 3 lakh votes in each. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday evening, Rahul Gandhi said, “This was a fight to save the Constitution of the country and has emerged victorious in it. The country has said that they do not want Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah to run the country,” said Rahul Gandhi in a press conference. The power fight by the INDIA bloc was also led by the Samajwadi Party, which dislodged BJP to win the highest number of seats (37) in Uttar Pradesh.

Why BJP’s top NDA partners may stay with the alliance – and why they might leave

Since the 2014 general election, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has been more symbol than substance, given the fact that the BJP under Prime Minister Narendra Modi enjoyed a comfortable single-party majority in both 2014 and 2019. The 2024 Lok Sabha election results have brought the salience of the NDA centrestage once more.

The question is: what will be the pound of flesh they each demand?

From TDP and JD(U) to LJP (Ram Vilas) and split NCPs and Sena, Aakash Joshi takes a look at the parties BJP will have to bank on to form the government.

DMK and allies set for clean sweep in Tamil Nadu, BJP fails to make inroads in southern state

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and its allies look set to achieve a clean sweep in all 39 seats in Tamil Nadu, with the AIADMK and BJP failing to open their account in the southern state as per Election Commission data. Party stalwarts like Dayanidhi Maran and A Raja, VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan and senior Congress politician were all on the road to victory.

BJP state unit chief Annamalai, seen as the party's strongest candidate in Tamil Nadu, was also trailing by a margin of more than1 lakh votes. In 2019, the DMK and its allies had won 38 seats, while the AIADMK, in alliance with the BJP, had won one. Read this analysis of Lok Sabha results in Tamil Nadu by Arun Janardhanan.

Lok Sabha Elections Results Analysis Live Updates: Why BJP's NDA partners may stay in alliance and why they might leave

The 2024 Lok Sabha election results have established the significance of the BJP's partners in the National Democratic Alliance, given the fact that as of 11 pm, although the NDA had crossed the halfway mark of 272, the saffron party had won 224 seats on its own. Therefore, the BJP will, for the first time, be dependent of allies JD (U) in Bihar and TDP in Andhra Pradesh. Read this report by Aakash Joshi to get a brief rundown of the parties the BJP will have to depend on to form the next government.

BJP's UP loss: Local disconnect, Agniveer, ticket choice, caste equations

For any party to form government - and a consolidated one at that - in the country, Uttar Pradesh is one of the key propellors. Having 80 seats in a house of 543, UP has always been a primary decider for the national outcome in Lok Sabha polls. In 2014, the state faciliated PM Modi's rise to power. In 2019 too, it helped the Prime Minister consolidate his seats in Parliament.

Therefore, come counting day, the state was expected to deliver an even bigger mandate to the saffron party. However, the BJP is struggling with leads in just 36 seats, losing its voter base to the Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance. The early signs could be spotted in 2019 itself, when Modi's victory margin dropped from 4.79 lakh to 1.52 lakh votes in Varanasi. Read Shyamlal Yadav's report on the factors that made the BJP lose the UP plotline.

AAP's crash in Punjab two years after landslide victory: ‘Aam Aadmi turned into Khas’

After Punjab Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader set an ambitious target of winning all Lok Sabha seats in the state while calling the Lok Sabha polls a "reality check" for his government, the party's performance displays the people's disappointment in the party. The party has won just three out of the 13 seats in the state, with four of five cabinet ministers in the state failing to secure victories in their seats.

Instead, the mandate has brought AAP's arch-rival in the state, Congress, to power. The party’s vote share has also fallen to 26% from 42% in the 2022 Assembly polls, when AAP had swept the state. Read Manraj Grewal Sharma's analysis here

After election results, what’s next

After the results are announced and the Election Commission hands over the list of newly-elected MPs to President Droupadi Murmu, the President will call the single largest party to prove that it enjoys the support of a majority of MPs.

Before that, each winning candidate will be handed over a certificate of election by the Returning Officer of the constituency. The candidate will be asked to sign an acknowledgement of receipt of the certificate, which will then be immediately sent by registered post to the Secretary General of the Lok Sasbha, as per EC’s guidelines. Lok Sabha Elections Results Analysis Live Updates: What Faizabad loss -- the seat of Ram Mandir -- means for the BJP

In a major setback to Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in Ayodhya, the party has lost its key Faizabad Constituency within four months of the consecration of Ram Mandir.

While official result is yet to be announced, Lallu Singh, the BJP candidate who was seeking re-election for the third time, accepted his defeat and said that the party will introspect and will fight back.

"Hum aapka aur Ayodhya ka samman bacha nahi paaye. (We couldn't save the honour of Ayodhya) There could have been some fault in me. You worked very hard and showed full dedication towards the party. My only request is that it may happen that if you go out in the area, opposition leaders and workers may comment on us. But will have to show tolerance and avoid any unwarranted things. Yudh ke maidan me haar jeet toh laga rehta hai (You win some, you lose some in a battlefied)," said Singh, while addressing party workers at the election office in Ayodhya.

He further said, "I will introspect about myself. There could have been a reason that we lost this election. Despite Modi-Yogi leadership, this has happened, so there must be some major flaw in me. Go to your home now. Do not lose your heart.

The Ayodhya defeat is not only losing a single constituency but it is also seen as an ideological defeat for BJP as Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed a consecration ceremony just a few months before the election and it was propagated by him and other party leaders across the country as one of the biggest achievement of the party.

Slogans like "500 varshon baad Ram Lalla apne ghar me aaye hain" and "Jo Raam ko laaye hain hum unko laayenge" were frequently used in the BJP's rallies. The Ayodhya defeat is also reminiscent of the election held after the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992.

After the Babri demolition, the Narasimha Rao government dismissed BJP governments in UP, along with Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh. In the 1993 election, SP-BSP formed an alliance. While BJP emerged the single largest party with one seat more than the SP-BSP, however, it was kept out of power as other non-BJP parties backed Mulayam.

The result has also inherent message that the 'Mandir alone' cannot work when there is a joblessness, paper leaks, rising inflation and local issues are not being addressed properly. -- Dheeraj Mishra writes

Naidu and Nitish: Men of the Moment as BJP fights to make 272 on its own

With the BJP likely to fall behind the majority mark, the formation of a new Narendra Modi government will now depend on the support of two veteran kingmakers — the Telugu Desam Party or TDP’s Chandrababu Naidu and Janata Dal (United) or JD(U)’s Nitish Kumar, both partners of the BJP in the NDA.

If the BJP remains below the majority 272 mark, (it is currently at 243), Naidu and Nitish could be the men who would prop up Narendra Modi in New Delhi. Read a short history by Deeptiman Tiwary of these two leaders and their remarkable political trajectories over the years.

Pratap Bhanu Mehta on 2024 Lok Sabha election results: Suffocating shadow has lifted, balance restored

"The general election of 2024 is a wondrous moment. The air of despondency, the suffocating shadow of authoritarianism, and the nauseous winds of communalism have, at least for the moment, lifted. The NDA may form a government for the third time. That is not a milestone to be scoffed at. But this election was not an ordinary election. At stake was the continuing possibility of politics itself. At the very least, the result pricks the bubble of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s authority. He made this election about himself: His performance, his omnipotence and omniscience, and his ideological obsessions. Modi is, for the moment, not the indomitable vehicle for History, or the deified personification of the people. Today, he is just another politician, cut to size by the people." Read more

Kerala result takeaways: Minority vote propels Congress, anti-incumbency dents Left

The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is leading in 14 out of 20 seats in Kerala, indicating that the coalition is set for one of the best-ever electoral performances in Kerala.

In Thrissur, BJP’s Suresh Gopi is set for a victory with a 74,000-odd lead while the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) is leading in Attingal and Alathur.

A major factor that worked in favour of the UDF was the resentment against the eight-year-old regime of the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left Front government.

An early analysis of the outcome shows that Congress managed to retain the minority votes of Muslims and Christians in the state, which had gone to the LDF in the Assembly elections of 2021. Read Shaju Philip's analysis.

The BJP on its own is falling short of the majority mark of 272. It is currently leading on 234 seats and has won eight, according to the Election Commission, reducing its 2019 tally, when it won 303 seats.

The NDA, meanwhile, is leading in 291 seats.

Lok Sabha Election Results Live Analysis: A look at Mandi, where Vikramaditya Singh trails Kangana Ranaut

Liz Mathew speaks about Vikramaditya Singh's prospects: "The Hindutva factor has played a part in other states but not Himachal. Viramaditya Singh is slightly different from others. He was one of the leaders who did a lot of rituals during pranprathistha (of Ram Temple) and people expected him to do well, but the gap, which is now huge, looks like will remain. Ranaut will always remain with the Narendra Modi sena. So, we will see what kind of performance she will give to BJP in terms of improving its image and acceptance in Himachal in the coming days."

What helped SP-Congress to upset BJP’s UP applecart

Behind the remarkable turnaround for the Opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress in Uttar Pradesh where the INDIA bloc is leading in 45 of the total 80 Lok Sabha seats, some fascinating factors may have given them an upper hand over the BJP.

One of the factors that may have worked in favour of the SP, which is leading in 37 seats, is its ticket-distribution strategy. Unlike previous elections, the SP ticket distribution focused on non-Yadav OBCs.

Also, the SP changed candidates in several constituencies, depending on feedback from local cadre and local caste equation.

Meanwhile, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who campaigned intensively in Rae Bareli and Amethi constituencies, didn’t hold many big rallies. Instead, she held over 20 nukkad sabhas daily, from morning to late evening. Read Asad Rehman's analysis.

Lok Sabha Election Results Live Analysis: A setback for JD(S) as Prajwal Revanna loses Hassan

The JD(S) suffered a major setback by losing its bastion of Hassan Lok Sabha constituency for the first time since 2004.

The BJP-JD(S) coalition had fielded sitting MP Prajwal Revanna, accused of rape and sexual assault as its candidate against Congress's Shreyas Patel. Congress won by a margin of around 44,000 votes.

Since 1991, JD(S) had won the segment seven of the eight times. The last time the Congress won was in 1999, when G Puttaswamy Gowda - grandfather of Patel - had defeated former PM Deve Gowda.

Deve Gowda had represented the constituency five times and ceded his seat to Prajwal Revanna in 2019. Videos of alleged sexual assault by the MP was leaked a week ahead of polling in the constituency on April 26, which is said to have affected Prajwal's re-election prospects.

Though Prajwal lost, other members of Deve Gowda family are set to win the polls as both former CM H D Kumaraswamy -- contesting from Mandya on a JD(S) ticket -- and son-in-law of Gowda Dr C N Manjunath - contesting on a BJP ticket from Bangalore Rural -- have secured a comfortable lead.

JD(S) prospects of winning the Hassan seat had suffered some hiccups as few prominent BJP leaders from Hassan - such as Karnataka BJP general secretary and former MLA Preetham Gowda - were unhappy about fielding Prajwal from the seat.

Prajwal, who had fled the country a day after polling, is currently under arrest in connection with the cases registered against him. He was holed up in Germany for more than a month before returning to India on May 31. -- Akram M reports

Lok Sabha Election Results Live Analysis: Stalin’s leadership drives DMK sweep, AIADMK intact but shaken

The DMK maintains its streak of electoral victories since 2019, poised for a near-sweep in the Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha polls. With the ruling party is leading in 38 out of 39 seats, Chief Minister and DMK president M K Stalin’s leadership takes the credit, his deft handling of alliances solidifying the state’s largest coalition, intact since 2019.

AIADMK stronghold Namakkal remains a tough battle with DMK holding a slim 1,500 vote lead.

The AIADMK is giving a strong fight in several seats but faces significant challenges. AIADMK's vote bank seem to be intact, but the party has been pushed to the third position by the BJP - with about half of the votes counted - in constituencies including Chennai South, Chennai Central, Vellore, Dharmapuri, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari. In crucial pockets of Tirunelveli and Tenkasi, AIADMK has fallen behind Naam Tamilar Katchi led by Tamil nationalist Seeman. -- Arun Janardhanan writes

Lok Sabha Election Results Live Updates: Kamal Nath accepts defeat as son Nakul trails in Chhindwara

With chances of victory slipping away from the Congress party in Madhya Pradesh's Chhindwara district, the former CM Kamal Nath has said that he accepts the results of the Lok Sabha elections.

As per the Election Commission, Kamal Nath's son Nakul Nath is trailing by a margin of 71,441 votes against the BJP candidate Bunty Vivek Sahu.

Kamal Nath, speaking on the Chhindwara trends at the Bhopal state headquarters, said, "I accept the decision of the people of Chhindwara. The results for INDIA alliance are really good. INDIA should try to form the government with other alliance partners."

Chhindwara has been dominated by Kamal Nath who has won nine times from Chhindwara since 1980, his family turf.

In the 2019 polls, the BJP bagged 28 seats of the state’s 29, but was defeated in Chhindwara as Nakul won by 37,536 votes to become the state’s lone Congress MP.

The Congress party was beset with resignations of three MLAs, including the three time tribal MLA from Amarwara, Kamleshwar Shah, which might have tipped the scales in the BJP's favour. -- Anand Mohan J reports

Lok Sabha Election Results Analysis Live Updates: In focus, Jitendra Singh and J-K's Udhampur

Dr Jitendra Singh, who is currently leading in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur, is known as a strong votary of the abrogation of Article 370 that granted special status to J&K.

A well-known doctor in Jammu, Singh joined BJP in 2012. His rise in the party was fast and soon he became a member of its national executive and also chief spokesperson for the party’s state unit.

Hailing from Malhori village in Doda, Jitendra belongs to a prominent family of the state. His father Rajinder Singh retired as Chief Engineer while his youngest brother Devender Singh Rana had been adviser to CM Omar Abdullah before becoming provincial president of the NC in Jammu region. Devender Rana is, at present, in BJP.

Though many complain about little communication between Dr Jitendra Singh and people of his constituency, even his political detractors agree that the constituency has seen unprecedented development during the last ten years.

In this context, official figures reveal that Udhampur parliamentary constituency is the only area in the country to have three Centrally funded medical colleges which were inaugurated and made functional only after 2014.

It is also the first parliamentary constituency to have North India’s first river rejuvenation project for the revival of Devika river.

It is also among the first constituencies of the country to achieve 100 per cent saturation in government welfare schemes like Kisan Credit Card and PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana, PM Ujjwal Yojana etc.

This is apart from a number of big road and tunnel projects undertaken in the constituency including world’s highest railway bridge in Reasi and the longest Chenani to Nashri road tunnel.

Not only this, the constituency got the North India’s first cable stayed bridge over Ravi and also a National Highway from Lakhanpur-Bani-Basohli-Doda via Chattargala Tunnel. -- Arun Sharma reports

Lok Sabha Election Results Analysis Live Updates: In Udhampur, BJP's Jitendra Singh headed for historic win

Leading by over 63,000 votes from his nearest Congress rival Choudhary Lal, the BJP’s Dr Jitendra Singh was headed for creating a history by winning the election for third time after two consecutive full terms.

Known as “giant killer” after he, during his maiden electoral battle, defeated the then-veteran Congress leader and former Jammu Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad in the parliamentary constituency by a margin of over 60,000 votes in 2014, is leading by nearly 5,000 to 10,000 votes after every round of counting.

Of the over 11 lakh votes polled in the constituency, over five lakh votes have been counted so far.

Ever since the first Lok Sabha elections were held in Udhampur parliamentary constituency in 1957, only the veteran Congress leader Dr Karan Singh, former Sadar-i-Riyast and son of last Dogra ruler of the erstwhile state Maharaja Hari Singh, and a senior BJP leader, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, have the distinction of getting elected from the area thrice in a row.

While the former had won the parliamentary election in the area in 1971, 1977 and 1980, the latter was declared elected from there in 1996, 1998 and 1999.

However, each had won a by-election held after the untimely fall of Janata Party government and Atal Behari Vajpayee government in 1980 and and 1998, respectively.

The last election, Singh had contested in Udhampur in 1980 as Congress (Urs) candidate.

BJP’s Prof Chaman Lal Gupta too was elected thrice in a row from Udhampur in 1996, 1998 and 1999. However, he had full five term only once. -- Arun Sharma reports

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Analysis Live Updates: As MVA candidate trails, Vishal Patil settles Sangli debate

The lone independent candidate Vishal Patil is all set to win the Sangli Lok Sabha seat in Western Maharashtra. Vishal Patil took the decision to contest as independent after being denied a ticket by the Congress in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. He is the grandson of
stalwart Congress leader and former chief minister Vasantdada Patil.

During the seat division, Sangli constituency had become the bone of contention between alliance partners -- Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) led by Uddhav Thackeray had made it a prestige issue and refused to concede the constituency to Congress. The Shiv Sena (UBT) fielded Chandrahar Patil as the official Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) candidate. The district Congress leaders refused to accept Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate and protested. The state Congress leaders took up the matter with the central party leadership in vain. The ugly war of words between Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress continued throughout the elections over
Sangli seat.

The Sangli seat saw a triangular contest between – BJP's sitting MP Sanjaykaka Patil, Shiv Sena (UBT) Chandrahar Patil and Congress rebel-turned-Independent Vishal Patil.

With Vishal Patil leading the election in sugar belt Sangli, it is a setback to both Shiv Sena (UBT) and BJP. The BJP's Sanjaykaka Patil had won the elections from Sangli in 2014 and 2019 polls. In the last elections, Sanjaykaka Patil had defeated Vishal Patil. -- Shubhangi Khapre reports

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Analysis Live Updates: Samajwadi Party has highest number of leads in UP, here's why

The Samajwadi Party is currently leading in 36 seats in Uttar Pradesh, while the BJP has the second-highest number of leads with 33 seats. Congress, too, is leading in seven seats.

But what has helped the Samajwadi Party? The M-Y and PDA factor.

Confident of retaining its core Muslim-Yadav voter base and seeking to make inroads into the votes of non-Yadav OBCs, who were seen to be consolidated in favour of the BJP, the SP fielded only five candidates from the Yadav community in its 62 seats.

Akhilesh also placed his bets on the backward people, Dalits and minorities, who he said would unitedly back the SP’s PDA plank, due to which the BJP’s “equations and previous formulas” would fail this time.

At his public meetings, Akhilesh also repeatedly demanded a caste census, maintaining that a caste survey in UP would ensure communities’ equitable share in reservation and government schemes for their development and welfare based on their proportion in the population. We decode.

Lok Sabha Election Results Analysis Live Updates: NDA moving towards decisive leads on over 20 seats

The NDA, which is leading on 33 seats, has been moving towards decisive leads on over 20 seats. Those moving towards decisive leads include Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular)'s Jitan Ram Manjhi (Gaya), Radha Mohan Singh (East Champaran), Giriraj Singh (Begusarai), Alok Kumar Suman (Gopalganj), Chirag Paswan (Hajipur).

INDIA bloc can take heart from RJD's Misa Bharti maining her lead over arch rival and sitting BJP candidate from Pataliputra Ramkripal Yadav. RJD's Surendra Yadav also maintains his lead over JD (U) candidate Chandeshwar Prasad Chandravanshi. Saran and Ujiyarpur seats continue to see keen contest between RJD and BJP.

Result trends so far, however, do not show much loss to JD(U) as was being predicted in almost all exit polls. LJP (R) has been maintaining lead on all the five seats it contested. Youngest Dalit LJP (R) candidate Sambhavi Choudhary is ahead in Samastipur.

As for INDIA bloc, while RJD and Congress look to win some seats, its ally Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) does not look to win any seat. Among Left parties, CPI (ML) may win Karakat seat. -- Santosh Singh reports

BJP set to retain North Goa, Congress leads in South Goa

After initial rounds of counting, the BJP looks set to retain the North Goa constituency, while Congress has built a slender lead in the South Goa constituency.

BJP’s Shripad Naik, who has won the North Goa seat five times successively since 1999, is leading against former Union Law Minister Ramakant Khalap of the Congress by 83,729 votes. Naik, who claimed in the run-up to the polls that this would be his last Parliamentary election, won the constituency by a margin of over 80,000 votes in 2019. The BJP has repeatedly claimed that it would win the North Goa seat by one lakh votes.

The fight was likely to be close in South Goa, a traditional bastion of the Congress which has a significant Catholic population. After the initial rounds of counting, Congress’s Captain Viriato Fernandes is leading against BJP’s Pallavi Dempo by 19, 272 votes. In 2019, Congress had won the seat by 9755 votes in a close finish.

The South Goa fight essentially narrows down to Salcete, the most populous taluka in the region accounting for over 40 percent of the voters in South Goa. After the initial rounds, the Congress is leading in several segments in Salcete.

In the run-up to the elections, Fernandes, a Kargil war veteran, had courted controversy after he made a remark during a corner meeting claiming that the Constitution was “forced” on Goans. Referring to the remark, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi had slammed the Congress for “insulting the Constitution” and called it a “calculated move to break the nation”. -- Pavneet Singh Chadha reports

Three of the seats – Araku, Rajampet and Tirupati – were contested by the BJP. The only other seat where the ruling party is in the lead is the YSR family bastion of Kadapa, where Y S Avinash Reddy is leading cousin Y S Sharmila of the Congress by over 25,000 votes.

The NDA alliance headed for sweep in Andhra Pradesh Assembly election

The TDP-JSP-BJP combine is headed for a sweep in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections with leads in over 150 constituencies.

Only one of the five deputy CMs – YSRCP's Rajanna Dora from Salur – was in the lead with most ministers except Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy trailing. The YSRCP was banking on its welfare schemes and hoping the rural segments and women would vote in their favour but that does not seem to be translating into votes.

The TDP alone has managed leads in 127 Assembly segments, way above the 88 required for majority. Adding to its kitty is the 18 of the Jana Sena and the BJP’s seven. On the other hand, the YSRCP, which had swept the polls in 2019 winning 152 seats, has the lead only in 21 seats, according to the Election Commission. -- Pushkar Banakar reports

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Analysis Live: Congress reverses fortunes in Haryana

From one seat in 2014 and zero in 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Indian National Congress is heading for a comeback in Haryana. In 2019, BJP had won all 10 Lok Sabha seats of Haryana.

In the initial counting trends till 11.30 am, Congress' candidates Deepender Hooda in Rohtak and Kumari Selja in Sirsa have crossed a lead margin of over 1 lakh votes each. In 2019, Deepender had lost Rohtak to BJP's Dr Arvind Sharma and Selja had contested from Ambala but lost to BJP's Rattan Lal Kataria.

Out of 10 Lok Sabha seats, Congress is consistently leading on six seats in Haryana.

Deepender Hooda is leading with highest margin of 1,01,282 votes over BJP's candidate Dr Arvind Sharma in Rohtak; while Kumari Selja is leading with second highest margin of 1,00,007 votes over BJP's Ashok Tanwar in Sirsa.

Other four seats where Congress candidates are consistently leading include Ambala from where Varun Chaudhry is leading by a margin of 30,619 votes over BJP's Banto Kataria; Jai Prakash is leading in Hisar by a margin of 7173 over BJP's Ranjit Singh; Satpal Brahamchari is leading in Sonipat by a margin of over 8336 votes over BJP's Mohan Lal Badoli; and Raj Babbar is leading in Gurgaon by a margin of over 32538 votes over BJP's Rao Inderjit Singh.

Congress' performance, so far, seems impressive considering the fact that in 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP candidates had won by a whopping margins over Congress. The closest fight was Rohtak where Dr Arvind Sharma had defeated Deepender Hooda by a wafer thin margin of 7503 votes. The victory margins of BJP candidates on all other Lok Sabha seats of Haryana varied from 1.69 lakh to over 6.5 lakh votes per seat. -- Varinder Bhatia reports

In Maharashtra, early trends show MVA leading Mahayuti

The initial trends for 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra shows a close contest with the Mahayuti leading in 20 constituencies, while the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) is ahead in 26, and Independents are leading in two.

While the counting continues, reports indicate BJP is leading in 20 seats and its alliance partners Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in six seats, the NCP led by Deputy CM Ajit Pawar is ahead in one seat.

From the emerging trends, it is a pointer that the MVA — Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) and Congress — is giving neck-and-neck competion to the ruling alliance.

The NCP (SP) led by Sharad Pawar sprung a surprise by leading in at least nine out of the total 10 seats contested. Initial trends indicate that Baramati's sitting MP Supriya Sule is leading Ajit Pawar's wife Sunetra by over 8,000 votes as of 11.30 am.

In Vidarbha, BJP's senior minister Sudhir Mungantiwar is trailing in Chandrapur against the Congress's Pratibha Dhanorkar. In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Chandrpaur was the lone seat that the Congress won.

Despite infighting between the BJP and the Shiv Sena, Shrikant Shinde seems to have taken a decisive lead in Kalyan against Vaishali Darekar of the Shiv Sena(UBT). The CM, who had made Thane a prestige seat as it is his hometown, shows Shiv Sena candidate Naresh Mhaske ahead of Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajan Vichare.

In Nagpur, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, who is seeking election for the third term, is leading by a comfortable 30,542 votes against the Congress's Vikas Thakre. In Shirur, NCP (SP)'s Amol Kolhe is way ahead of NCP (Ajit Pawar) Adhalrao Patil. -- Shubhangi Khapre reports

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Analysis Live: The Kuki-Meitei divide shows up in Manipur results

The BJP-backed Naga People's Front has a comfortable lead against the Congress in the Naga and Kuki-Zomi tribal majority Outer Manipur seat but in the Inner Manipur seat, which largely covers the Meitei-majority valley region of the conflict hit state, it is the Congress which has taken the lead.

The Congress's candidate is outspoken JNU teacher A. Bimol Akoijam, who is making his political debut. His entry into politics has largely been prompted by the ongoing strife in the state. His campaign has largely been pointed against the handling of the conflict in the state by the BJP-led governments in the state and at the centre.

The BJP's candidate is Th. Basanta Kumar Singh, who is a minister in Biren Singh's state cabinet. Akoijam's campaign was largely a mobilization of the widespread discontent against the handling of the conflict, in which lives continue to be lost and over 50,000 continue to be displaced.

The BJP's campaign had emphasized on some steps taken by it which it pitched as being long-term solutions to unrest in the state such as the central government's decision to fence the Indo-Myanmar border and to do away the Free Movement Regime with Myanmar. Akoijam has been accusing the BJP of exacerbating divisions in the state. -- Sukrita Baruah reports

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Analysis Live: In focus, BJP's Suresh Gopi in Kerala

Suresh Gopi is leading in Kerala's Thrissur and is the only BJP candidate to do so.

He campaigned with the slogan "a Union Minister for Thrissur, Modi’s guarantee’’. Gopi who had contested in 2019, has been focusing on the constituency over the last one year and the party’s prospects in this constituency are being built, day by day, on the promise that he would be a minister in the next NDA regime in Delhi.

This was also one of the few seats where BJP tried to combine Hindu and Christian vote banks. Gopi’s popularity as a star also seemed to have helped him to emerge a front runner at this stage in the counting.

But the contest in Thrissur was under the shadow of allegations of nexus between CPI(M) and BJP. CPI(M) district leadership in Thrissur has been under the scanner of central agencies in connection with financial irregularities and black money parked in party controlled cooperative banks and other bank accounts.

During the campaigning, Congress had alleged that there is a secret understanding between CPI(M) and BJP to trade votes in Thrissur for settling the probe by ED and Income Tax Department against CPI(M) leaders.

The allegation had got a new twist on the eve of polling on April 26 in the wake of the revelation of a power broker T G Nandakumar that BJP kerala in charge Prakash Javadekar had promised to “settle” the SNC Lavalin, in which a CBI appeal against the discharge of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and others is pending in the Supreme Court case in lieu of the Left support for the BJP in a few Lok Sabha seats in Kerala. Nandakumar had alleged that he had been party to discussions between CPI(M) central committee member E P Jayarajan and Javadekar.

If Gopi wins Thrissur, pushing Congres to third position, the issue would trigger a fresh controversy over the allegations of vote trading between CPI(M) and BJP, which Congress had kept alive during the campaigning.

In 2019, Gopi finished third, behind the Congress and CPI candidates, but got an impressive 2.93 lakh votes. Now, Thrissur is one of the constituencies in Kerala where BJP is betting on to win, on the strength of Gopi’s popularity, the Hindu votes, and its own efforts in the state towards wooing the Christian community, which forms around 21% of the electorate. -- Shaju Philip reports

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Analysis Live: Will BJP open Kerala account? Suresh Gopi leads in Thrissur

Three hours into counting of votes in Kerala, BJP’s Suresh Gopi in Thrissur has gained a clear lead over his rivals LDF’s V S Sunil Kumar and Congress’ K Muraleedharan.

Gopi is leading by over 25,000 votes at 10.45 am. BJP has never won a Lok Sabha seat in Kerala and if Gopi breaks that jinx, he along with the party state unit would create a major history in the state’s electoral politics with far reaching consequences across the state’s political spectrum.

That will also show that Thrissur will buck the trend in 2024 when the entire state stood with Congress or Left, both part of the INDIA bloc at the national level. -- Shaju Philip reports

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Analysis Live: In focus, Parshottam Rupala and the Kshatriya protests

Parshottam Rupala, the 69-year-old veteran is fighting his first direct election in 21 years. He is currently leading in Rajkot.

However, his campaign for the prestigious Rajkot Lok Sabha seat had suffered an early setback after Kshatriya community objected to his remarks at a Dalit event that foreign rulers, including Britishers did all they could to persecute India and that even raja-maharajas (kings) bowed down to them and sought friendly ties with them by breaking bread with them and giving their daughters in marriage.

While Rupala subsequently apologised by releasing a video statement and also from public forums, Kshatriyas had alleged that the comments betrayed Rupala’s views on Kshatriya community in general and women of that community in particular and had demanded that he withdraw from the poll race. When he didn’t, protesting Khshtriyas had demanded that the ruling BJP cancel his election ticket.

When the saffron party didn’t budge, Kshatriyas had given a call to defeat Rupala and BJP in Gujarat. They took out dharma rath yatras, held sammelans and disrupted election campaign meetings of BJP leaders, including Rupala’s as well as Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. The continued protests had forced Gujarat BJP president CR Paatil to appeal to Kshatriyas to forgive Rupala and vote for the BJP.

The fury of protests notwithstanding, the early trends of counting of votes suggested that Kshatriyas didn’t have enough numbers and that their agitation against Rupala and BJP didn’t strike a cord with voters haling from other communities. -- Gopal Kateshiya reports

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Analysis Live: Parshottam Rupala overcomes Kshatriya anger

Union Minister Parshottam Rupala built a massive lead over his Congress rival and senior leader Paresh Dhanani in the initial rounds of counting of votes of Rajkot Lok Sabha seat and early trends suggested the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader was set to win the prestigious seat despite his campaigning having been overshadowed by Kshatriya protests against him.

At the end of Round-5 of vote counting, Rupala had garnered 2,18,548 votes while Dhanani, the former leader of Opposition in Gujarat Assembly had polled on 85,576 votes. Thus, Rupala, the veteran BJP leader who is holding portfolios of fisheries, animal husbandry and dairying, was leading Dhanani by 1,32,972 votes.

At the end of Round-5, more than 3.14 lakh of total 12.60 lakh of EVM votes had been counted. Thus, around 25 percent of total EVM votes polled had been counted at the end of Round-5 though votes are to be counted in total 28 rounds.

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Analysis Live: Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad, once termed 'vote-cutter', leading with over 50,000 votes

Aazad Samaj Party (ASP-Kanshiram) leader Chandrashekhar Azad, who during the canvassing in Nagina Lok Sabha constituency was being termed by his opponent candidate as “vote cutter” only, was leading on the seat with a margin of 51,093 votes as he has secured 1.59 lakh votes by 11 am when the counting is still going on.

BJP candidate Om Kumar, a sitting party MLA, is trailing as he has got 1.08 lakh votes. SP candidate Manoj Kumar was at third place with 34753 votes.

On this SC-reserved seat, where Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) had won in 2019, party candidate Surendra Pal Singh was nowhere in the fight as he was trailing at fourth place with only 4702 votes.

BSP had apprehended the threat from ASP president much earlier. In the first rally of BSP in elections, then BSP national coordinator Akash Anand had attacked Chandrashekhar and appealed youths and Muslims to not get mislead.

However, Muslim and Dalits had indicated that they will vote to Azad as they were looking for a new leadership for their communities.

The result is setback for both BJP and BSP. To convince Dalit voters in support of BJP, UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath in a rally in Nagina had highlighted that a new glory has been given to Guru Ravidas's birthplace in Varanasi and international airport in Ayodhya has been named after Maharishi Valmiki.

Apart from Jatav dalits, Chandrashekhar had been trying to woo non-Jatav dalits to cause a damage to BJP. In that direction, he had addressed a "samajik bhaichara mahasammelan" of Valmiki community where Muslims too were present. -- Lalmani Verma reports

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Analysis Live Updates: The resurgence of Telugu Desam Party

The main Opposition, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), had formed an alliance with Jana Sena Party (JSP) and BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

The NDA comprising TDP, JSP and BJP, established slender leads in Assembly elections.

The TDP was nowhere in the picture till a year before the election, and was struggling to retain its diminishing political space. It changed a bit after N Chandrababu Naidu was arrested on September 9 last year by the AP CID in connection with an alleged scam in the AP Skill Development Corporation that occurred during the TDP’s regime from 20014 to 2019.

He was granted interim bail on October 31, 53 days later, and on November 20 the HC granted him regular bail. Not only did it garner sympathy for the former CM but it also galvanised actor turned politician and chief of JSP, K Pawan Kalyan, to declare his support and an electoral tie-up with TDP.

Naidu and Kalyan then negotiated with the BJP to join the alliance which it did in March just two months before the elections. The TDP-JSP-BJP (NDA) contested on the platform that Jagan had ruined the state with the cash heavy welfare schemes and had driven the state into debts. The issues of the state not having a proper capital city, lack of development or industrial investments, and unemployment were also issues that TDP and JSP raised.

In 2019, the TDP suffered a shocking defeat, winning only 23 Assembly seats and 3 Lok Sabha seats.

There was severe anti-incumbency against YSRCP ministers and MLAs but Jagan tackled it by dropping many candidates or shifting them to other constituencies. -- Sreenivas Janyala reports

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Analysis Live Updates: Will NDA upset YSRCP's reign in Andhra Pradesh?

In Andhra Pradesh, where elections were held simultaneously for 175 Assembly and 25 Lok Sabha seats on May 13, the NDA comprising Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Jana Sena Party (JSP) and BJP, established slender leads in over 100 of 175 Assembly constituencies and 10 of 25 Lok Sabha seats during the first few rounds of counting.

The YSRCP was leading in 20 Assembly and 5 Lok Sabha seats.

But it appears to be a fierce contest in the rural constituencies where the leads are constantly changing.

The TDP took lead in north Andhra Pradesh, while mainly leading in erstwhile undivided districts of East Godavari and West Godavari which have a combined 34 Assembly seats. In Rayalaseema region, too, where the YSRCP had won 49 of the 52 Assembly seats in 2019, the TDP candidates established slender leads in over 40 seats. If the trends continue, the ruling YSRCP could be in a tight spot.

Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy went to the polls alone on the strength of the numerous welfare schemes that he had launched and said that over 80 per cent of the state’s population had benefited from them. However, like in neighbouring Telangana where the Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) government suffered a shocking defeat in spite of implementing numerous welfare schemes, banking alone on the welfare schemes by the YSRCP while ignoring governance and development issues may have put in a difficult position. While there are initial trends and several rounds of counting are still pending, the NDA in Andhra Pradesh is looking strong at the moment. -- Sreenivas Janyala reports

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Analysis Live: The Jat factor in Rajasthan

Half of Congress’s leads in Rajasthan, where it looks set to end its drought, were with Jat candidates. As per early trends, Rahul Kaswan was leading in Churu, Hanuman Beniwal in Nagaur, Brijendra Ola in Jhunjhunu, Ummeda Ram in Barmer – all are Jats and bar Barmer, were contesting against a Jat candidate.

Unlike 2014 and 2019, the Congress party had also allied on three seats: Rashtriya Loktantrik Party in Nagaur, CPM in Sikar, and Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP) in Banswara; and was leading in all three. -- Hamza Khan reports

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Analysis Live: Congress set to end drought in Rajashtan

The Congress party on Tuesday looks set to end its ten-year-old dry run in Rajasthan, where it lost all 25 seats to BJP and NDA in 2014 and 2019, respectively.

As per early trends, the Congress and INDI Alliance was leading in 11 of the state's 25 seats.

While BJP was banking on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s hold over voters, Ram Temple, removal of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, etc. and a perception about India’s “powerful” image abroad, apart from consolidating its power through inductions of leaders from other parties, the Congress was relying on anger towards BJP amongst Jats, anti-incumbency and coalitions to make a dent into BJP’s aim to win all 25 seats from the state for the third time.

The Congress also seems to have gained in Rajasthan from early voting phases, when there was perhaps saturation with the BJP and PM Modi. All 25 Rajasthan seats had voted in the first two phases of the long election. Perhaps sensing a churn, PM Modi had led his party’s offensive, from Rajasthan no less, through his controversial statements in Banswara and Tonk – Sawai Madhopur Lok Sabha seats. These statements were made after the polling for the first round had been completed and the second round was awaited. -- Hamza Khan reports

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Analysis Live: Will Zoram People's Movement repeat its Assembly polls performance?

In Mizoram, a comfortable lead has been assumed by the Zoram People’s Movement which swept the Mizoram state legislative assembly elections late last year and ended the decades long Mizo National Front – Congress duopoly of power in the state.

The state assembly election had been its first state election as a recognized party and it has been consistently gaining strength in the state over the last couple of years – from municipal polls, to the state polls, to now, imminently, the national polls. -- Sukrita Baruah reports

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Analysis Live: It's regional parties' moment in the sun in Northeast

Regional parties on the rise – which are not affiliated to either the NDA or the INDIA national alliances – are having their moment in the sun in the Northeastern states.

The Shillong Lok Sabha seat in Meghalaya – one of two seats in the state – with its largely Khasi and Jaintia population is seeing an interesting scenario playing out with the emergent Voice of People’s Party currently leading by a margin of more than 37,000 votes against incumbent Vincent Pala from the Congress. Pala has held this seat for three consecutive terms whereas the VPP – which has Ricky Syngkon as its candidate – made its electoral debut in last year’s Meghalaya state assembly election. The party had contested in only 12 out of 60 seats, but made waves by winning four of these seats.

The other major contender for this seat is Ampareen Lyngdog, an experienced legislator at the state level and current Meghlaya state minister with the ruling National People’s Party in the state. -- Sukrita Baruah reports

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Analysis Live Updates: Early trends show Narendra Modi tailing in Varanasi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently trailing by 6,223 votes in the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency. However, it must be noted that this is based on very early trends.

PM Modi is up against Congress state chief Ajay Rai. Interestingly, Rai began his career as a ‘karyakarta’ of the Hindu nationalist outfit Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), following which he was made the convener of BJP’s student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Rai entered the Congress in 2012.

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Analysis Live Updates: INDIA polls defying exit polls

INDIA bloc was leading in over 200 seats as of 9.15 am, according to early trends. This is significant as most exit polls predicted figures less than 200 for the Opposition alliance.

However, it must be noted that the numbers are based on postal ballot votes.

For the INDIA bloc, these Lok Sabha elections are test of the alliance. While it may stop short of forming a government, it hopes to upset the NDA's tally and form a strong Opposition in Parliament. If party leaders are to believed, the INDIA bloc may just defy exit polls and form the government with "295 seats".

The results will also signal the alliance's performance in Assembly polls later this year.

Lok Sabha Election Results 2024 Analysis Live Updates: 5 things to watch out for in Maharashtra

Counting of postal ballots gave an early lead to the BJP-led NDA in 26 seats, while INDIA bloc is ahead in 22 seats. While Union minister Piyush Goyal is leading in Mumbai North, Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Amol Kirtikar is seeing gains in Mumbai North West.

The split of parties coupled with the sharp Maratha versus OBC polarisation will be decisive as far as the BJP’s performance goes. The polls will answer who the 'real' Shiv Sena and NCP are, after the split in parties, leading upto the polls.

Meanwhile, all eyes will be on the Marathwada region, where the Maratha agitation led by activist Manoj Jarange-Patil was the most intense. Read latest updates updates from Maharashtra here.
