In a significant development, Amazon, following Microsoft's lead, is supporting a proposed bill that aims to restrict Nvidia's AI chip exports to China. The bill, known as the Guaranteeing Access and Innovation for National Artificial Intelligence (GAIN) AI Act, is also endorsed by AI startup Anthropic. The GAIN Act, integrated into the National Defence Authorisation Act, imposes a crucial requirement on AI chip manufacturers: they must prioritize fulfilling domestic orders for advanced processors before exporting to foreign buyers. This means that American companies will have first dibs on the most powerful chips, potentially limiting their availability to other nations. The report reveals that while Microsoft has publicly backed the legislation, Amazon's cloud division has privately expressed its support to Senate staffers. In contrast, Meta Platforms and Alphabet's Google have not taken a stance on the Act, and neither has US President Donald Trump.
