Piastri's Brazilian F1 Sprint Race Disaster: A Red Flag and a Setback for His Championship Hopes
Oscar Piastri's Formula 1 aspirations took a significant hit as he crashed out of the Brazilian Grand Prix sprint race, triggering a red flag. Piastri's misfortune began at Turn 3 on a damp Interlagos circuit, where he slid off the road, losing third place and a potential two-point gap to his leading McLaren teammate, Lando Norris. This crash could result in an eight-point deficit for Piastri, placing him nine points behind Norris if Norris wins the race.
Kimi Antonelli, who was second, observed Norris running slightly wide and dragging water from the kerb before Piastri's pass. Piastri's subsequent contact with the same kerb sent him spinning into the barriers, mirroring the fate of Nico Hulkenberg and Franco Colapinto, who collided moments later. The impact was severe for Piastri and Colapinto, while Hulkenberg managed to return to the pits with his damaged Sauber.
The race was halted after eight laps due to barrier repairs, with Colapinto's crash being particularly violent. When the race resumes, Norris will lead Antonelli, George Russell, and Max Verstappen, who overtook Fernando Alonso on the initial lap, now in fourth place, thanks to Piastri's retirement.
