East Valley could see rainfall, experience gusty winds with Labor Day weekend storms (2024)

The National Weather Service says only a lucky few will see rain accumulation from the storm.

PHOENIX — Storms are developing east of the Phoenix metro area, but only a lucky few will see rain accumulate this holiday weekend, the National Weather Service says.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that storm chances will continue Sunday and bring gusty winds to the Valley. The most likely time for isolated showers in the metro area will be between 3 and 8 p.m.

But those hoping for rain are likely not going to see it, NWS said. There were pockets of heavy and quick downpours earlier in the day near Globe and Apache Junction, but rain accumulation is not expected to be significant if at all outside of the East Valley area.

A few weather advisories for parts of southeastern Arizona are also on the radar for the holiday weekend. The NWS issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Florence, Coolidge and La Palma.

At about 3:40 p.m. on Sunday, the NWS warned about storms headed southwest toward Mesa along State Route 87, also known as the Beeline Highway. The storms will have strong, gusty winds that could reach speeds as high as 50 miles per hour. The NWS expects this storm to move through the East Valley between 4:15 and 5:15 p.m.

A potentially severe thunderstorm is tracking southwestward along Hwy 87 approaching Mesa. Strong gusty outflow winds upwards of 50 mph out ahead of the storm are also likely to sweep through the East Valley over the next 30-60 minutes. The outer edges of the outflow winds should actually move into east Mesa in the next 15 minutes.
