Forest Service also was closed to the public, a and was turned into a base camp for fire crews. Despite the progress in protecting Cooper Landing, the fire's western edge still was burning fiercely out of control Sunday. "The fire is making a large, intensive run on the western flank. We're having fire storms, heavy fuel conditions (It's) unsafe to deploy personnel," said Harry Frey at the Interagency Fire Information Center at Cooper Landing. "The clouds are glowing red," Frey said.

The fire is believed to have been started by bear hunters. It prompted state officials to ban camp fires and other open fires on the peninsula: Two separate areas were burning, officials said, though they were being classified as one fire. The area near lower Russian Lake was set deliberately to stop the spread of the original fire, but by Sunday it too was burning out of control. The Kenai and Russian rivers, two of the nation's foremost salmon spawning streams, and a power transmission line also were threatened. ASSOCIATED PRESS COOPER LANDING, Alaska A raging wildfire that turned clouds a "glowing red" forced the emergency closure Sunday of a major highway and the evacuation of 200 Memorial 1 Day campers in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge.

Officials by midafternoon had ordered the campers out of the Hidden Lake area and the Hidden Lake campground after the Pothole Lake Fire reached the Kenai River near Skilak Lake. By 4 p.m., the fire had jumped the Kenai River and Alaska State Troopers ordered the Sterling Highway closed. The highway links Anchorage and Kenai and is heavily traveled, especially on holiday weekends. Sue Mitchell of the Interagency Fire Information Center in Anchorage said the highway probably would be reopened quickly. "It's going so fast it's going to be across the highway and the danger will be passed, presumably very quickly," she said.

The fire had burned about 6,000 acres by Sunday afternoon, up from 4,900 acres by Saturday. An initial threat to homes in the Cooper Landing community greatly diminished by Sunday, officials said. So far, no homes were evacuated. Firefighters dug a fire line that should keep the fire from getting any closer to the community, they Catherine Atkins FULTON, Ky.
